UPCOMING GAMES AND PROMOTIONS
Friday, March 25 - Columbus at Augusta, 7:30 PM EDT (Season Series vs. AUG: 2-6(2))
The Snakes will head to the opposite end of the state of Georgia for their final road game of the regular season on Friday night against the Augusta RiverHawks. The red-hot 'Hawks are winners of 17 of their past 20 games, going on two win streaks of eight games and their current nine-game streak sandwiched around three consecutive losses. The Cottonmouths are in search of their first SPHL win at the James Brown Arena as they have dropped all four games played there against the first-year RiverHawks. Augusta is still in the hunt for the regular-season championship but they would need Mississippi to drop at one of their two remaining games to have a chance to do so.
Saturday, March 26 - Louisiana at Columbus, 7:30 PM EDT (Season Series vs. LOU: 5-3(0))
The Louisiana IceGators close out their season and the Snakes' regular season in Columbus on Saturday night. The IceGators had a successful week last week with goaltender Mike Brown turning away a whopping 54 shots on goal in a 4-0 shutout win in Columbus Friday night and taking Pensacola to a shootout on Saturday night before losing a 5-4 decision. The Snakes have lost the last three games in a row against Louisiana, whose playoff fate has been sealed for the past few weeks but have been a much-improved team of late, playing .500 hockey at 8-8 in their last 16 games.
PROMOTIONS: Operation Sellout! Let's send the Snakes into the playoffs in front of a large, energetic crowd. Fans who book a group outing of 15 people or more will be in the running to win ONE free set of 2011-12 season tickets. The one fan who books the largest group will be the winner. Groups must be 15+ and tickets will be $10 each. Each group over 15 will receive 1 replica jersey to raffle off among members in the group. Groups must be booked and paid for by Friday, March 25 at 5 pm. Call the Snakes office with questions. Saturday is also Fan Appreciation Night.
COTTONMOUTHS WEEK IN REVIEW
Thursday, March 17 - Columbus 6 at Huntsville 4 (Attendance: 2,363)
Columbus won their second straight game in Huntsville Thursday night in a wild 6-4 final at the Von Braun Center. The Snakes jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Havoc scored three unanswered goals, only to see the Cottonmouths reclaim a three-goal lead with a pair of goals in the final seconds of the second period and late in the third period. The Havoc scored a goal in the game's final two minutes, but it was too little, too late. Jordan Braid lit the lamp twice with Will Barlow, Jesse Cole, Peter MacDougall, and Bret Tyler scoring once each. Andrew Loewen took the win between the pipes for Columbus with 30 saves on 34 shots on goal. Huntsville's Dan McWhinney started the game and only stopped two of the five shots on goal he saw before being spelled by Mark Sibbald, who would go on to make 20 saves on 23 shots. Columbus's power play was torrid with three goals in 10 chances while Huntsville was 1 for 6 with the man advantage.
Friday, March 18 - Louisiana 4 at Columbus 0 (Attendance: 2,993)
Louisiana goaltender Mike Brown turned in one of the best goaltending displays ever for a Columbus opponent on Friday night, turning aside all 54 shots on goal he faced in a 4-0 shutout over the Cottonmouths at the Snake Pit. His counterpart in net for the Snakes, Ian Vigier, stopped 13 of 17 shots on goal. Both teams were scoreless on the power play with Columbus having seven chances with the man advantage and Louisiana three.
Saturday, March 19 - Mississippi 2 at Columbus 3 (SO) (Attendance: 2,585)
Matt Kinnunen and Jordan Braid scored in regulation and Tom Maldonado was credited with a goal in the shootout game-winner to give Columbus their second win of the season against the league-leading Mississippi Surge in a 3-2 win on Saturday night. Ian Vigier atoned for his performance the night before with 39 saves on 41 shots on goal, while Dan Earled was the losing goaltender in net for Mississippi with 34 saves on 36 shots. The Snakes were 1 for 5 on the power play while holding the Surge scoreless in their seven chances with the man advantage.
