Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
Five different players scored goals for the Lubbock Cotton Kings to help lead the Cotton Kings to a 5-2 victory over the Fort Worth Brahmas Tuesday afternoon at the Lubbock Coliseum in Lubbock, Texas.
The game, which was played at a special 11:00 a.m. start time because of a school field trip promotion by the Cotton Kings, got off to a great start for the Brahmas, as defenseman Robert Fail scored on the Brahmas first shot on goal at just 26 seconds into the first period.
Fort Worth's would lose control of the game over a six minute stretch later in that first period. First, Cotton Kings defenseman Derek Holland tied the score at 1 with his rebound goal at the 9:15 mark of the period. Then, with the Cotton Kings on a 5 on 3 power play, Lubbock forward Jim Shepherd gave Lubbock the lead with a goal at the 14:13 mark. The Cotton Kings stretched their lead to 3-1 when forward Dave Macintyre converted another Lubbock power play at the 15:17 mark. The Brahmas pulled back to within a goal at 3-2 when center Chad Grills scored his second goal of the season, a power play goal, with just 1:15 left in the first period.
Lubbock pushed their margin back out to two goals at the 4:21 mark of the second period when forward Steve Birch scored his first goal of the season. The Cotton Kings controlled play throughout the second period, outshooting Fort Worth 18-8 in the frame and not allowing the Brahmas to generate any offensive momentum.
In the third period, Lubbock added another insurance goal when forward Jeff Dewar scored 10:37 into the frame. The Brahmas would fight to get back in the game, outshooting Lubbock 12-10 in the period, but their struggles with the power play would cost them. Fort Worth was 1 for 10 with the man advantage, and the Brahmas could not convert on a lengthy two man advantage in the final six minutes of the third period when they desperately needed a goal.
For the fourth consecutive game, goaltender Erasmo Saltarelli played well for Fort Worth. Saltarelli stopped 37 of the 42 Cotton Kings shots sent his way. Mike Brusseau, the Lubbock netminder, made 26 saves on 28 Fort Worth shots to earn the win.
With the loss, the Brahmas record drops to 1-2-1. Fort Worth will play at Wichita on Friday, Oct. 31 and then return home this Saturday, Nov. 1 for their home opener at the Fort Worth Convention Center against the Oklahoma City Blazers.
