Ice Stalks Jackalopes in Two Home Games this Weekend
October 28, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Indianapolis Ice News Release
PRACTICE SCHEDULE: The Ice practices Monday-Thursday at the Pepsi Coliseum from 10-11 a.m. and has a pre-game skate on Friday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the Pepsi Coliseum.
CONSISTENCY IS KEY: Captain Bernie John is having his customary beginning to a season as the fifth-year Ice defenseman has tallied a point in each of the team's first four games with a goal and three assists. With his three helpers to start the season, he has inched closer to the all-time Ice franchise mark (IHL and CHL) for career assists as he lies just three back of the current record (209 assists) held by his former teammate, Chris MacKenzie.
FAST FIRSTS: The first period of games has been kind to the Icemen this season as the team has tallied eight of its 14 goals in the first, while outscoring its opponents 8-3 in the opening frame. The eight first period tallies is the most of any CHL team this year and the Ice has also scored the first goal in all four of its games this season.
SHOOTOUT SPLIT: The Ice has already played in two shootouts this season as the team split a weekend home series with Fort Worth with a shootout win and a shootout loss. Jason Baird has been the top marksmen in the extra session so far with two scores, while Jeff Sanger has owned the top glovehand with four saves on four shots. Last season, the Ice was just 4-8 in shootouts. Jared Dumba (2-3, 67%) and Kevin St. Jacques (7-12, 58%) were the top shootout scorers last season, while Shawn Silver had the most success in net with a 58% save percentage.
ZELENEWICH MAKES PRO DEBUT: Goaltender Brent Zelenewich made his first professional start between the pipes in Saturday night's 3-2 shootout loss to Fort Worth. The rookie netminder deserved a better fate as he played well stopping 23 of 25 shots in regulation and overtime and three of five shots in the shootout. He joins the Ice this season after a successful collegiate run at St. Mary's University which included a 2001-02 Atlantic University Sport (Canadian Collegiate) Championship.
PLAYER NOTES: Jared Dumba has five points (3G, 2A) in four games, while Jason Baird has four points (2G, 2A) in four games...Dave Gilmore has two goals in his last three games...Ryan Aikia's next game is his 400th of his pro career...Philippe Choiniere netted his first professional career goal last Friday...Jason Selleke scored his first goal back with Ice on Sunday and is one goal shy of 50 for his pro career... Jared Dumba has scored the first goal in two of Indy's four games this year and leads the Ice all-time against Odessa with four points (G, 3A).
TEAM NOTES: The Ice is undefeated against the Jackalopes with a 2-0-0 all-time record...Indy's four first period goals this past Friday is the highest period output in the CHL this season....Success has come in the first period for the Ice this year, but the club has been outscored 9-5 in the second and third period of games this season...Indy enters this week third in the CHL in goals/game (3.50) and shots/game (34.8)...The Ice was 5-1-2 in eight games at Conseco Fieldhouse last season.
