Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
Hidalgo, Tx - Last time Lance Leslie posted a shutout in a Lubbock Cotton Kings uniform was during the 2001/2002 season as Tracy Egeland, Derek Holland and Ryan Shmyr were a couple of his teammates. Holland and Shmyr are now members of the Egeland coached Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, who had to watch Leslie stop all 24 shots fired by the Bees to gain his 12th career shutout (second as a member of the Cotton Kings) and the first shutout for the Lubbock Cotton Kings since February 19, 2001 (88 games) in a 3-0 victory over the Bees Wednesday at Dodge Arena.
The Bees came out on fire in the first period, holding the Cotton Kings without a shot on goal for the first nine minutes of the game before the 'Kings held the Bees without a shot for the period's final ten minutes. Rio Grande Valley out-shot the Cotton Kings 9-7 in the scoreless first period.
The Cotton Kings continued their shooting barrage in the second period, out-shooting the Bees 19-3 in the second period. The Bees were held without a shot on goal for close to 22-minutes before getting a shot on goal with 8:22 remaining in the period. Lubbock fired away 22 consecutive shots on goal during the Bees shooting draught. 'Kings leading scorer Anders Strome added his ninth goal of the season on one of the 19 shots fired in the period with a wrist shot in the slot, as he broke through the left side and deked a shot past Bees goaltender Jeff Levy.
Paul Fioroni converted on a give-and-go from Matt Turek 12:08 into the third period to take a 2-0 lead. Anders Strome sealed Leslie's shutout with an empty net goal with 42-seconds remaining.
The loss extends the Bees winless streak to nine games, and the Bees will now head on the road for five consecutive games, beginning Friday night at San Angelo.
