Lansing Lugnuts News Release
Comstock Park, Mich. - The West Michigan Whitecaps took advantage of several key miscues from the Lansing Lugnuts Sunday afternoon and parlayed them into a 6-5 win over Lansing in 13 innings at Fifth Third Ballpark.
The Lugnuts led the Whitecaps 5-4 in the ninth inning. Audy Ciriaco started the frame with a single into left field, but moved to second on the play when Yohermyn Chavez misplayed the ball in the outfield. Alex Avila's groundout moved Ciriaco to third base with one out, but hurler Joe Wice was able to fan Kody Kaiser for the second out.
Hayden Parrot then hit a ground ball to third baseman Jonathan Jaspe for what appeared to be the final out of the game. However Jaspe's throw pulled Mike McDade off of the bag at first base, allowing Ciriaco to score and sending the game into extra innings tied at 5-5.
The Whitecaps bullpen would dominate from there, as Rudy Darrow and Noah Krol did not allow a hit after a lead-off single in the seventh inning.
Wice would work four scoreless innings for Lansing, before turning the ball over to Michael Barbara in the 13th.
With the bases empty and two out, Barbara (0-2), who took the loss, surrendered back-to-back singles to Ciriaco and Avila. Kaiser then came up and dropped a single just out of the reach of right fielder Moises Sierra, scoring Ciriaco for the game winning run.
Lansing trailed 2-0 after one inning Sunday when Kyle Peter and Justin Henry scored on an error by first baseman Mike McDade. McDade fielded a ground ball from Ciriaco that would have been the third out, but dropped the ball as he was running to first base.
The Lugnuts battled back to tie the game in the fifth before taking the lead in the sixth.
Sierra's triple into right-center field plated Manny Rodriguez to put Lansing ahead 3-2. McDade then singled, scoring Sierra to double the lead at 4-2. Jonathan Baksh ended the scoring in the inning with an RBI single that brought McDade home, putting Lansing up 5-2.
The Whitecaps answered back with two sacrifice flies in the bottom of the inning to get within a run of the Lugnuts.
Krol (2-1) got the win for the Whitecaps after tossing the final two innings of the game.
Lansing (46-35, 7-4) and West Michigan (42-37, 5-6) will wrap-up the four-game set Monday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. Marc Rzepczynski (3-2, 2.31) will hurl for Lansing, while Mauricio Robles (3-1, 4.21) will get the call for the Caps.
The game can be heard through the internet only Monday afternoon at www.lansinglugnuts.com. The Lugnuts will be back on WQTX Oldies 92.1 FM Tuesday night for the opener of a four-game series at South Bend.
