Correll Goes Deep Twice in 4-2 Extra Inning Victory

SCHAUMBURG, IL - Brad Correll slugged a two out, two run bomb in the tenth to push the Joliet JackHammers (39-39) past the Schaumburg Flyers (31-48) Sunday afternoon at Alexian Field. The JackHammers took two of three from the Flyers and are now tied for the fourth and final playoff spot.

Cody Evans (2-5) started the tenth by retiring the first two hitters before Kevin Rios singled into right field. Correll then lifted a high fly ball into the gusty winds in right field that sailed over the wall for a two run homer and a 4-2 lead.

The Flyers sent the game into extra innings by scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth. Paul Fagan, who was signed before the game, started the inning by walking Travis Brown. Ruddy Yan sacrificed Brown to second with one out to bounce Fagan. Bear Bay (6-5) came on and struck out Kit Pellow, but allowed a single by Mario Delgado to tie the game at two.

Fagan was fantastic in his first start with Joliet, tossing 7.1 innings allowing the two runs on five hits with six walks and one strikeout. The JackHammers turned four double plays behind Fagan, including one each in four consecutive frames.

Correll got his first long ball against Aaron Guinn in the first, lining a drive over the wall in left center for the 1-0 advantage. He was back at it in the sixth, getting a one out single against Guinn. Jon Nelson singled Correll to third and Freddie Thon hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the JackHammers a 2-1 lead.

Guinn was effective in six innings for Schaumburg, surrendering two runs on only four hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Bay picked up the victory in his second relief outing of the season, working the final 2.2 innings. The right-hander allowed only two hits and struck out three, tossing a perfect tenth to preserve the victory.

Correll led the 'Hammers with three hits, two home runs, and three runs scored. Rios and Nelson each collected two hits with Thon knocking in the other run.

Yan and Delgado had two hits for Schaumburg, with Kit Pellow driving in a run on a sacrifice fly in the third to tie the game at one.

The JackHammers will continue their 11 game road trip in nine days tomorrow night in Lake County. The doubleheader will feature Devin Anderson (3-4) in game one with Brian Gartley (4-0) going in game two. First pitch for game on is slated for 6:00 p.m. with a 5:50 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
