Cornish and Paredes Are September's Best

For the second time this season, Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish and kicker Rene Paredes have been chosen as the Canadian Football League's players of the month.

Cornish is the CFL's Canadian player of the month for September while Paredes is the special teams player of the month. Both players won the same awards for the June-July period.

Cornish amassed 458 rushing yards in five September contests including a 131-yard performance in Edmonton on Sept. 6 and a 114-yard game against Hamilton in Guelph, Ont., on Sept. 28. The seven-year veteran from New Westminster, B.C., had 150 more rushing yards during September than any other CFL player.

Cornish also had 14 receptions for 94 yards and one touchdown during the month. For the season, he has 1,207 rushing yards - just 15 behind league leader Kory Sheets - and a league-best 1,468 yards from scrimmage. Cornish also shares the CFL lead with 10 touchdowns.

The Kansas product has won the Canadian player of the month award five of the six most recent occasions it has presented and six times overall.

Meanwhile, Paredes had another strong month as part of his exceptional season to date. He converted on 15 of his 16 field-goal attempts including eight-for-eight on field goals of more than 40 yards. On Sept. 6 in Edmonton, he was perfect on five attempts including a 50-yarder. On Sept. 21 against Toronto, Paredes booted a career-best 52-yarder.

The third-year Concordia alum also was 14-for-14 on extra points and added a single for a total of 60 points. He averaged 63.1 yards per kickoff during September. For the season, Paredes leads the CFL in points (153), field goals (38) and field-goal accuracy (95.0 per cent).
