Copperheads Complete First Tryout Camp

November 5, 2007 - arenafootball2 (af2)
Texas Copperheads News Release

On Saturday November 3, 2007, the Texas Copperheads of arenafootball2 conducted open tryouts at the Richard E. Berry Center Football Stadium in Northwest Houston. Approximately 40 registrants participated, each hoping to catch the eye of Copperheads Head Coach Ollie Guidry.

When asked how a player can separate himself from the pack Guidry said, "We're looking for impact types of football players. A guy needs to come out here and make certain times, whether it's the 40 yard dash, the shuttle or the vertical jump. When we look at the times, we can tell if a guy has been working out and preparing himself to be in a situation, at a level such as the Arena Football League. Once we get to the 'one on one' and individual parts of the work out camps, that will be the real opportunity to show they are a football player. Times are one thing but football aspects are most important."

When the spirited morning work was complete, Guidry addressed the group and encouraged everyone to return on November 17 for the final tryout camp of 2007. After dismissing all but five players, Guidry offered additional instruction and encouragement to the remaining group. "We want to see if they can make the transition from the little bit of coaching that we did today, and see if they can take it with them, and come back and improve themselves."

Former Sam Houston State Bearkat Johnny Fett was one of the five to distinguish himself from the pack. "I thought I had a good work out. There was a lot of competition here today. I look forward to coming out again and giving it my all. I'll be back on the 17th for the second tryout."

At the next tryout session, a combination of "invite guys" and open registrants will participate. "This (today's workout) was more of an open tryout, no phone calls. The 17th will be a workout where we're making calls, so I expect the talent level to be a little higher compared to what we had today".

Continue to monitor www.texascopperheads.com for additional information about the November 17th session. In the interim, Coach Guidry can be contacted at 832-593-7227 for additional information.

Season tickets, "pick four" flex plans and group ticket packages are now on sale for the 2008 Texas Copperheads season. Call the Copperheads' office at 281-807-6000 for additional information.
