Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release

ROANOKE, VA - The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), backed by an outstanding performance by goaltender Shawn Conschafter, earned their first shutout win of the season Sunday evening, as they blanked the Jackals 6-0.

Steve Crusco put the Vipers on the board first with a power play goal at 7:10 of the first period. Assisting Crusco on the goal were fellow-rookies L.P. Martin and Alex Jerofejevs. Josh Tataryn wristed a shot past Ryan McIntosh off passes from Crusco and Jan Jas just 11 seconds later to put the Vipers up 2-0. Roanoke continued its mauling of the Jackals, taking advantage of some sloppy play and a slew of penalties from Elmira. Jerofejevs would score two consecutive power play goals before the first period buzzer even sounded, at 10:37 and 15:08 of the period. Martin assisted on both goals, and Petr Jelinek and Mark Scott each added helpers on the goals respectively.

Matt Miller scored on a shorthanded breakaway pass off the stick of Dave Shillington, as he scored the first professional goal of his career at 18:59 of the second period. Josh Tataryn added his second goal of the night at 12:25 of the third period, off passes from Martin and Jas.

Shawn Conschafter saved 31 of 31 shots taken by the Jackals to earn his first shutout of the season. The Vipers defense assisted Conschafter in killing 10 Jackals power play chances throughout the match. Conschafter was named the Cornerstone Bar and Grill number one star of the game for his outstanding efforts and performance, as he helped give the Vipers the win and lift them back above the .500 mark (5-4-1). Along with the win, the Vipers gained sole possession of second place in the United Hockey League Eastern Division, moving two points ahead of the Danbury Trashers.

The Vipers will take a much-needed rest after their four-games-in-five-days homestand, which they completed with tonight's win. Friday, November 18 the Vipers will travel to Kalamazoo, MI to face the Wings for the first time this season. The next Vipers home game will be Wednesday, November 23rd against the Jackals, as they will look for win number three on the season against Elmira.
