Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - Veteran center Connor Gutenberg will reach a significant Western Hockey League milestone Friday night when he takes to the ice to lead the Brandon Wheat Kings up against the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers at Westoba Place.

The 20-year old captain of the Wheat Kings, who is currently in his fifth and final season in the WHL, will be playing in his 300th career game.

In recognition of the milestone, the Western League club has announced that a special presentation will be played during the game.

The last remaining member of the 2016 WHL Championship team still on the roster, Gutenberg has played his entire major junior career in Brandon, joining the club in the fall of 2015.

A graduate of Brandon's successful U18 AAA program, Gutenberg was chosen both the Rob Stouffer Most Inspirational and the McDonalds Most Community Minded Player in 2018-19.

Chosen by Brandon in the fifth round of the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft in Calgary, Gutenberg enters Friday's game having scored ten goals and 26 points in 50 games this season.

In 67 games last season, the 5'9" 165 lb. Gutenberg scored sixteen goals and 47 points.

Since joining the Wheat Kings, he has scored 173 points, including 63 goals in 299 career games.

Gutenberg becomes the first Wheat King in four years to reach the 300-game plateau. The last one to do it was defenceman Macoy Erkamps, who played the first three years of his junior career in Lethbridge.

The last player to reach 300 games in a Brandon uniform was Eric Roy, who reached the milestone during the 2014-15 campaign.

Gutenberg is currently tied with Teegan Moore for tenth place on the club's all time list for games played with 299. On Friday night, he will move into a tie with Randy Ponte (300).

He will also become one of only ten players that have played 300 or more games in a Wheat King jersey, joining the likes of Ponte, Ryan Craig (302), Dale McMullin (309), Aaron Goldade (310), Tim Konsorada (311), Brodie Melnychuk (318), Lance Monych (319), Roy (322) and Dwayne Gylywoychuk (323).

The Wheat Kings enter Friday's game with a record of 27-19-2-2 and occupy third place in the WHL's Eastern Division.

Friday night is also WHL SUITS up for Organ Donations, presented by RE/MAX, in support of the Kidney Foundation.

Gutenberg and the Wheat Kings will be wearing special Hockey Night in Canada theme jerseys during the game, which will be auctioned off before and during the game. As well, the first 3,000 fans in attendance will have a chance to take home a bobblehead, featuring the likeness of Ron MacLean and Don Cherry, in recognition of their 34-year partnership on Hockey Night in Canada.

Tickets to the game are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
