Connecticut Sun News Release
(Manchester, CT) - The March of Dimes Connecticut Chapter is pleased to announce that the WNBA's Connecticut Sun has partnered with the organization to raise awareness about pregnancy and baby health in addition to raising funds through March of Dimes March for Babies. Formerly known as WalkAmerica, March for Babies is the March of Dimes premier fundraising event that benefits all babies-those born healthy as well as those who need help to survive and thrive.
"The Connecticut Sun is very excited to be a partner with the March of Dimes and its March for Babies," said Sun Director of Marketing Gwendolyn Pointer. "Our organization is committed to helping those in need, and through this partnership and our involvement with the March for Babies, we feel that it is an excellent way for both the organization and our fans to give back to the community."
Families from around the state are encouraged to sign up for the Connecticut Sun March for Babies team at www.marchforbabies.org/connecticutsun. For an initial $20 registration fee, team members will walk with players and coaches on March for Babies day in Mystic, receive an exclusive Connecticut Sun March for Babies t-shirt and a ticket to the March of Dimes Celebration game on May 30th at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The first 30 people to register for the Connecticut Sun team will also have the opportunity to form the "Fan Tunnel" at the Celebration Game. Proceeds from the registration fee will benefit the March of Dimes.
The Connecticut Sun March for Babies team will be participating in Mystic on Sunday, April 27th. March for Babies begins at the Mystic Arts Center. March for Babies will begin at 10 a.m. There are 10 event locations statewide on April 27th and May 4th. For more information, visit www.marchforbabies.org.
Premature birth touches half a million babies and their families every year including over 4,100 babies in Connecticut. Babies born too soon are more likely to die or have disabilities. More than 120,000 babies are born with serious birth defects that can mean a lifetime of disability. Babies born healthy need champions too, to be sure they have access to newborn screening and preventive health care. The March of Dimes and the Connecticut Sun are there for all babies.
In 2008, national March for Babies sponsors are CIGNA, Continental Airlines, Famous Footwear, Farmers, FedEx, Grain Foods Foundation, Liberty Tax Services, nesting.com, and Kmart, the March of Dimes number one corporate partner which has raised more than $63 million for babies. Additional national sponsorship is provided by Discovery Health, Mead Johnson Nutritionals, Outdoor Services and Ther-Rx. In Connecticut, March for Babies is proudly sponsored by CIGNA, Bob's Discount Furniture and NBC 30 Connecticut News.
