NEWINGTON, CT â April 12, 2003 â The Connecticut Crush Women's Professional Football Team opened its 3rd season on the road this past Saturday with a spectacular 12-7 victory over the Philadelphia Phoenix.
Philadelphia scored early in the first quarter but a strong defensive showing by the Crush limited the Phoenix to a 7-0 advantage at the half, despite five Crush turnovers. The Crush closed the gap on Philadelphia's lead early in the fourth quarter when QB Donna Bruce #9 completed a touchdown pass to first year player Kim Palmer #13. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful and the Crush trailed 7-6. The Crush staged another spirited offensive drive resulting in QB Donna Bruce scoring on a QB sneak to give the Crush a 12-7 lead with 2:00 left in the game. Philadelphia attempted a comeback in the closing minutes but an interception by Safety Carolyn Bell #33 sealed the victory for the Crush. After the game, Crush Defensive Coordinator Mike Colavito said, "The team showed amazing character and never gave up."
The Crush travel to Rochester, NY this Saturday, April 19th to take on the Rochester Raptors. The Crush home opener will take place on Saturday, May 3rd at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in New Britain, adjacent to the home of the New Britain Rock Cats. Kickoff is 7:35 P.M.
