Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors, official ECHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks, had another record-setting season in the community in 2009-10. While the Condors were successful on the ice winning their first Pacific Division title, off the ice, the organization made just as much of an impact, raising over$358,000 in cash, goods and services for local charities and non-profits. In the team's 12-year history, a staggering total of more than $3.6 million in cash and goods have been donated to Kern County organizations.
"Our organization is centered around its connection with the community," said President Matthew Riley. "We pride ourselves on supporting those who support us year in and year out. We're excited to have another successful year raising money for other organizations in Kern County, and hope to continue that success in the coming years."
COLLECTION DRIVES:
Even before the puck dropped, the Condors held their eighth annual Open House and Family Fun Day Canned Food Drive for the Kern County Food Bank. A total of 1,200 pounds of food was raised, bringing the eight year sum to nearly 19,000 pounds of food. Less than two weeks into the season, on Oct. 28, the sixth annual Toy Drive, sponsored by ABC23 and R & D Leather Furniture, to benefit Stay Focused Ministries, brought in 260 toys for local children in need. Over the past six seasons, 1,611 toys have been collected through the annual Toy Drive.
On Nov. 10, with winter setting in on Kern County, 1,500 coats were donated to for the Condors 12th annual Warm Families Coat Collection, sponsored by KGET-17, 106.1 KRAB Radio and Direct Buy. The coats were donated to Teen Challenge, Bakersfield Homeless Center, Jamison Children's Center, CHW Mercy Learning Center and Boys & Girls Club of Kern County.
The Condors hosted their annual Field Trip Day, sponsored by My 45, HOT 94.1 and Department of Public Health on Nov. 18 and hosted thousands of local students. Following the game, 200 boxed lunches were remaining and were promptly donated to local Bakersfield homeless shelters.
One of the biggest events every year in Bakersfield took place on Nov. 28 at Rabobank Arena. The 12th annual Teddy Bear Toss, presented by 29 Eyewitness News, KERN 1180 and Wells Fargo Bank, included a near sellout crowd of 8,825 fans throwing a record-setting 8,075 stuffed animals onto the ice, following F Stephane Goulet's goal at 6:34 of the first period. The crowd was the fifth largest in Condors history. United Way distributed the stuffed animals to more than 60 Kern County non-profit organizations. Throughout the 12 years, 60,544 stuffed animals have been delivered to children in Kern County.
My 45, La Preciosa 105.3 and Payment Systems Worldwide teamed up with the Condors to host the annual Canned Food Collection on Mar. 9. Condors Fans donated close to a record 1,900 pounds of food for the Kern County Food Bank and Golden Empire Gleaners. The annual Canned Food Collection has raised more than 19,500 pounds of food for the homeless in Bakersfield.
For the sixth straight season, the Condors worked with Houchin Blood Bank to promote a month-long blood drive. Throughout the month of March, 1,512 people donated blood at Houchin and received discounted tickets to the Mar. 30 Condors game, sponsored by My 45 and KUZZ 107.9.
In the post-season the Condors hosted a jean drive, to benefit Goodwill Industries, and was sponsored by ABC23, bringing in a total of 569 pairs of jeans and other clothing items.
JERSEY AUCTIONS AND RAFFLES: The day before Halloween, on Oct. 30, saw the Condors host the first of three specialty jersey raffle and auctions of the season, with King of Pop themed jerseys, sponsored by ABC23, HOT 94.1 and Children's Miracle Network. In December, in honor of "the day that will live in infamy," Pearl Harbor specialty jerseys, presented by KUZZ 107.9, American Business Machines and Bud Light were donned by the team, and on Feb. 14, the players wore Valentine's Day themed jerseys, sponsored by Bright House Networks, 95.6 Max FM and McDonald's. At each game, the jerseys were auctioned off at center ice, with all of the proceeds going to local charities. Money was also raised for charities through silent jersey auctions and raffles throughout the season, including the NASCAR-themed jerseys worn during warm-ups for every home game this season and the organization of the night jersey raffle. In total, nearly $76,000 was raised for more than 20 charities through jersey raffle and auctions, including Children's Miracle Networks, California Brain Injury Association, Ronald McDonald House and Active 20/30 Club. Jersey auctions over the past 12 seasons have raised an astonishing total of nearly $700,000 for charities in Kern County.
SPECIAL EVENTS In early November, the players traded in their hockey sticks for the day and replaced them with golf clubs for the 12th annual Condors Charity Golf Classic. With four participants paired up with a player, everyone hit the links at Rio Bravo Country Club. The charity event helped raise $6,702 for the Kern Bridges Youth Homes. In its 12-year history, the classic has brought in $56,037.
A busy season in the community was highlighted by one of the more entertaining nights of the season on Feb. 23. The players returned to the arena floor that night to help serve as waiters and sing karaoke to those in attendance for the 10th annual Tip-A-Condor Dinner. Through tickets, a live and silent auction and karaoke requests, the event brought in $9,107 for the Kern County Shrine Club. Over the past decade, the event has raised a total of nearly $120,000.
A special annual event was held from Mar. 19-20, the sixth annual Condors Fighting Cancer Hockey-thon, presented by 29 Eyewitness News, KUZZ 107.9 and The Bakersfield Californian. For more than 24 straight hours, hockey was played at Rabobank Arena and the Bakersfield Ice Sports Center, including two Condors games and nearly a dozen pick-up games between Hockey-thon participants. The $31,427 raised through pledges and the jersey auction benefited Links for Life. Over the past six seasons, the Hockey-thon has raised $234,622.
FUNDRAISERS AND APPEARANCES: Throughout the entire year, non-profit organizations host dozens of worthy charitable events, and the Condors do their best to help as many as possible. During the 2009-10 season, the Condors donated more than $9,000 worth of tickets and Condors gear to these local charity events. In addition, through the T.H.I.N.K. (Turn Hockey Into New Knowledge) Nights, Classroom Champions, Big Buddies and Raymond Rascals and Summer Reading programs, nearly 13,000 tickets were donated to area students and kids with support from these sponsors: Mercy & Memorial Hospitals, Wells Fargo Bank, Diamond Technologies, ABC23, SC Architect and Kern County Firefighters.
With many organizations hit hard by the economy, the Condors played their part in helping those in need of raising funds for their cause. Through Condors Fundraisers, a program that allows organizations to raise cash through Condors ticket sales, $41,977 was raised for the 60 organizations that participated. The top fundraising effort came from Children Joining Children for Success, which raised $7,275 for local schools.
While the Condors are proud of the bigger events that garner more attention, they're equally excited about the dozens of smaller events that go on from a week-to-week basis. Player appearances throughout the season included visits to Memorial Hospital, Valley Bible Fellowship, the Epilepsy Society Fiesta Night, Bakersfield Dragons youth hockey practices, Si Se Puede Learning Center, Rosewood Retirement Community as well as more than a dozen school and other events. Plus, mascots Colonel Claw'd, Baby Cal and Slapshot attended nearly 200 events throughout the past year, including Care-A-Vans, sponsored by Goodwill Industries, to nearby towns to help entertain residents in Kern County.
Members of the Condors Kids Club not only had the chance to come out to six games for free and receive great Condors gear, but also had an exclusive Meet the Team Party at Rollerama West on Feb. 9. The party included roller skating, street hockey and arcade games with the whole team.
Even though the hockey season has concluded, the Condors will still be out in force in the community all spring and summer long. If you're interested in getting any of our mascots, Colonel Claw'd, Baby Cal or Slapshot, the inflatable Slapshot Booth or the Condors prize wheel out to your camp, youth program, school or other event, call the Condors office at 324-PUCK (7825).
