Bakersfield Condors News Release
ANCHORAGE, AK. - The Bakersfield Condors were blanked by the Alaska Aces in Game 1 of the National Conference Semifinals, 6-0, Monday night, in front of 5,003 at Sullivan Arena. The win gives Alaska a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
The series started with a bang, as Josh Liebenow's shot just 11 seconds in knocked the mask off Alaska netminder Derek Gustafson. Unfortunately, the Condors never beat Gustafson all night, as he stopped 29 shots for the shutout.
The Aces scored first while shorthanded, as Ryan MacMurchy went around Sean Venedam and beat Rejean Beauchemin on the short side for a 1-0 Aces lead at 14:05.
Before the first period ended, the Aces had doubled their lead to 2-0, when Kimbi Daniels took an errant Condors clearing attempt and fed it down low to Joe Talbot, who slid it past Beauchemin at 18:15.
Alaska went up 4-0 with a pair of goals early in the second period. Mike Scott made it 3-0 when he ripped a backhand in at 3:34, and Talbot followed up with his second of the night after Beauchemin had made a sliding stop on Barrett Heisten.
Bakersfield had a big chance to get back into the game late in the second period with a two-man advantage for a full two minutes, but the closest they came to breaking into the scoring column came when Brett Lutes shot hit the post flush and the puck bounced right back into play.
The Aces piled it on in the third, scoring twice within 16 seconds, as Daniels slid a puck across the line past a prone Jamie Hodson, who had replaced Beauchemin after the fourth Alaska goal, and then off the ensuing faceoff, Olivier Filion finished off a two-on-one break by rifling home a shot to make it 6-0.
Notes: Alexandre Bolduc was re- called by Manitoba Sunday and played against Grand Rapids Monday night, registering two shots on goal and six penalty minutes. Jay Langager (3-day), Steven Gillen (7-day) and Todd Griffith (30-day) did not make the trip to Alaska for the first game.
Game 2 of the series is 8:15 p.m. (PST) Wednesday at Sullivan Arena. The Condors return home to host the Aces for Games 3, 4 and 5 if necessary at The Nest. Game 3 is 7 p.m. Friday night, and it's Cheer Stix Giveaway, as all fans in attendance will receive a pair of Condors cheer stix, courtesy of KGET-TV 17 and California Water Service Co.
