Kansas City Comets News Release


The Kansas City Comets overcame a six-point, first-quarter deficit and a slew of penalties Sunday to defeat the Cleveland Force in Cleveland, 16-14. With the win, Kansas City improved to 12-12 on the season.

Cleveland's Giuliano Oliviero scored first, just 3:40 into the match. Miki returned fire for the Comets at 5:00 of the period, however, to tie the game back up. The Force then went on a scoring spree, with a goal from Justin Evans and two from Lee Edgerton in the next four minutes, to take Cleveland up, 8-2. Dino Delevski got his first of three in the game at 9:48 of the period, to round out the first quarter scoring.

The Force's Craig Kench added another for Cleveland at 2:22 of the second, before Delevski and Alex Zotinca paired up for a three-goal run that took KC out in front, 12-10, for their first lead of the game early in the third period. Edgerton completed the hat-trick and tied it up for the Force at 1:15 of the fourth, and Kiley Couch took them back out in front, 14-12, at 6:33 of the final frame. Kansas City rallied, however, as Jeff Davis nailed a two-pointer at 9:06 of the fourth, and Miki added his second of the game, at 10:04, to take the lead for good.

The game was wrought with penalties and aggressive play, as Kansas City was called for a total of 20 minutes in penalties, while Cleveland racked up 14 of their own. KC went 2-2 on the power play in the game, while Cleveland went 3-5.

Dino Delevski led the Comets in scoring, with 1-3PG and 2-2PGs for seven points. Lee Edgerton led the Force, with 3-2PGs for six points. Paolo Ceccarelli got the win in goal for KC, stopping 15 of 22 shots faced. Jim Larkin took the loss for Cleveland, with 14 saves on 21 shots faced.

Kansas City returns home this weekend for back-to-back games, as they host the Dallas Sidekicks on Friday night for Country & Western Night, and welcome the Harrisburg Heat on Saturday for Pop Rock Night. Highlights for Saturday include the finals of "KC Idol" at halftime, and a post-game concert by Liverpool.

MISL AWARDS

Cleveland Force forward Lee Edgerton was named MISL Offensive Player of the Week. In two games, Edgerton scored three goals and three assists, for nine total points. Six of Edgerton's points came against the Comets on Sunday.

Scott Hileman of the Baltimore Blast won Defensive Player of the Week honors, stopping 38 of 46 shots over two games, including 22 of 23 shots faced on Friday night against Philadelphia.

The MISL will announce the Eastern Conference All-Star Team on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The Western Conference All-Star Team will be announced the morning of Wed., Feb. 5. Thursday, Feb. 7, is the scheduled date for the announcements of MISL Players of the Month.
