Comets Fall to Blast, KiXX in Preseason Tournament

Milwaukee, WI – The Kansas City Comets dropped a pair of close games, falling 3-1 to the Baltimore Blast in an afternoon contest and losing a 4-3 decision to the Philadelphia KiXX in a nightcap during the first day of the 2003 MISL Easter Seals Preseason Classic on Friday. Games were played in two 24-minute halves with a running clock at US Cellular Arena in Milwaukee.

Baltimore keeper Scott Hileman turned away four of the five shots he faced in the first game. David Bascome's restart goal at 9:22 of the first half put the Blast on top, but Aleksey Korol tied the game for K.C. with a tally of his own at 14:49. P.J. Wakefield and Danny Kelly sealed the victory with second-half goals for Baltimore. DJ Horvath went the distance in goal for the Comets, saving eight of 11 shots. Kansas City accrued 11 penalty minutes in the contest.

The Comets fell behind the KiXX 4-1 early in the second half in Friday's final game, but pulled to within 4-3 with six minutes left on goals by Jamar Beasley and Franck M'Bemba. KiXX keeper Stuart Dobson (three saves) stood strong down the stretch and got the win in goal, while Eric Kenas (no first-half saves) and Josh Schreck (three second-half saves) split time in goal for the Comets. Beasley finished the game with a pair of goals.

The Comets conclude the Preseason Classic on September 27 when they take on the San Diego Sockers on the 27th at 4:00 p.m.

The Comets will open their 2003-04 regular season when they host the Steamers at Kemper Arena on Saturday, October 11. Kickoff is 7:35 p.m. Central Time.

NOTES: In other tournament action, the San Diego Sockers defeated the St. Louis Steamers 1-0 and the host Milwaukee Wave 3-2; the Cleveland Force downed the expansion Monterrey Fury 5-0; and the Dallas Sidekicks roared past the Steamers 6-2. All nine MISL clubs are back in action tomorrow.
