INDEPENDENCE, MO - The Missouri Comets (11-3) were unable to defeat the Chicago Mustangs (10-2) for the fifth time in Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) history as the visitors pulled off a 10-3 victory in front of 4,202 fans at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
With the win, Coach Armando Gamboa's team took the top of the Central Division. On the other hands, the Comets will now get a three-week break before hosting the Baltimore Blast, who clinched a playoff berth earlier tonight, on January 31.
For the first time this season, Missouri was held scoreless until the fourth quarter as they struggled to beat goalkeeper Jesus Flores in a very busy night for both him and Boris Pardo with 17-9 saves respectively.
Only three tallies were scored in the first half. First, Chicago's Adolfo "Bofo" Bautista opened the scoring after 7:21 ending the first quarter 1-0. Two more from Efrain "Wilo" Martinez and Taylor Bond in the second ended the half 3-0 Mustangs.
The third quarter was full of scoring opportunities on both sides. However, either teams was able to score heading to the fourth and final quarter in which the Comets scored three times via Max Touloute and team captain Vahid Assadpour but Chicago's offensive mindset ended up in seven goals from Bond (2), Camarena, Rojas Riveria, Bautista and Vaca to end the match 10-3.
