Houston Comets News Release
HOUSTON - The Houston Comets announced today the signing of guard Gordana Grubin to a free agent contract. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
"We are excited to have Grubin, who gives us a point guard with great outside shooting ability," said Head Coach and General Manager Van Chancellor. "She adds experience to our backcourt, and is versatile enough to play both guard positions."
Grubin (5-11, Yugoslavia) has averaged 8.4 points, 2.4 assists and 2.2 rebounds over four seasons in the WNBA. Her most recent WNBA action came in 2002 with the Phoenix Mercury, starting 31 of 32 games played while averaging career highs in points (9.9) and assists (3.3). Grubin joined the Mercury from the Indiana Fever as part of a four-team trade on March 4, 2002. She had spent two seasons with the Fever after being the first overall pick in the 1999 Expansion Draft. Grubin was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks on June 10, 1999. She averaged 8.9 points and 2.8 assists with the Sparks in her first WNBA season. Grubin also ranked fifth in the league in 3-point shooting percentage (.430) in 1999.
A native of Zrenjanin, Yugoslavia, Grubin has been playing this offseason in Italy with Albo D'Oro Basket Parma. Her international experience also includes stints with Lotos VBW Clima in Poland (2001-02), Cerve Parma in Italy (2000-01), Mizo Pecsi in Hungary (1998-99), Vojvodina in Yugoslavia (1997-98) and KK Hemofarm in Yugoslavia (1996-97). In addition, Grubin teamed with former Mercury teammate Slobodanka Tuvic on the Yugoslavian National Team, which finished seventh in the European Championships in 1999 and made it to the semi-finals in 2001.
