Columbus Vanquishes Louisiana in Shootout, 5-4

Nick Curry scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Columbus Cottonmouths picked up the extra point in a 5-4 (2-1 SO) win over the Louisiana IceGators.

The shootout lasted for 14 attempts between the teams. Louisiana's shootout goal was scored by Jake Hauswirth. Columbus' other shootout goal was scored by Levi Lind.

The Cottonmouths came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Columbus fell behind 4-3 after a goal by the IceGators' Bret Peppler at 3:35 in the third period. The Cottonmouths knotted things up at 4-4 on a goal by Lind at 19:09 in the third period.

Craig Simchuk was all over the ice for Columbus, as he tallied one goal and two assists in the win. Simchuk scored 5:07 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Columbus. Patrick McCadden picked up the assist.

The Cottonmouths put 44 shots on net during the contest, more than the 31.3 they average per game.

Columbus additionally got points from Andy Willigar, who also had one goal and one assist. Columbus also got a goal from Bryce Williamson as well. In addition, Columbus received assists from Kyle Johnson, Mike Switzer, and Neilsson Arcibal, who each chipped in one.

Louisiana kept Columbus' goalie busy throughout the game, and Andrew Loewen made 40 saves on 44 shots.

The IceGators were helped by Adam Stuart, who tallied one goal. Stuart scored 11:22 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Shawn McNeil assisted on the tally. Louisiana also had goals scored by Hauswirth and Jeremy Boyer, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Louisiana were Bobby Watson and Matt Viola, who contributed one each.

The Cottonmouths totaled 14 minutes in penalty time with two minors and two majors and went 1-for-3 on the power play. Marco De Filippo made 39 saves for Louisiana on 43 shots. The IceGators totaled 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors and went 0-for-1 on the power play.
