Columbus defeats Roanoke in OT

Roanoke, Va. (Mar. 20) - The visiting Columbus Riverdragons needed overtime to beat the Roanoke Dazzle 106-103 in Saturday afternoon NBDL action.

The Riverdragons used a strong finish in the fourth quarter to tie the game at the end of regulation 95-95. Columbus forced overtime when Courtney James converted a lob pass off an in-bounds play with 0.1 left on the clock. Riverdragons head coach Jeff Malone listened to his players in the huddle before the game-tying bucket. "Courtney told us to look for that lob (pass from Harrington), and it worked." Columbus (14-23) trailed 87-77 with 6:10 remaining before outscoring the Dazzle 18-8 to force overtime.

Columbus took the lead for good in the overtime at 99-97 on a Courtney James put back at the 2:33 mark. Jeff Myers put the game out of reach at 104-99 with a three-point field goal with just 1:46 left in the extra session. Myers and James both contributed 4 points in the overtime. Sedric Webber led Columbus with 28 points, followed by Terence Morris with 25.

The Dazzle (20-18) were led by Josh Asselin who posted a 26 point, 14 rebound double-double. Kevin Owens also posted a double-double for Roanoke with 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Dazzle played without starting point guard Marque Perry, who was sidelined with an eye injury. Also starting center Geoff Owens suffered a back injury in first quarter and did not return. Roanoke head coach Kent Davison reflected on what the Dazzle needs down the stretch. "We’ve got to get healthy, but we’re not far off. We just need to be tougher."

Columbus returns home for a week of rest before hosting Roanoke on Friday, March 26. The banged-up Dazzle will travel to Charleston tonight for a 5pm contest versus the Lowgators on Sunday.
