COLUMBUS - Major League Soccer (MLS) and LIGA MX, with the support of Concacaf, announced today group stage opponent details for the inaugural edition of the highly anticipated Leagues Cup 2023. The Columbus Crew have been drawn into the Central 1 group and will host both Liga MX powerhouse Club América and MLS expansion team St. Louis CITY SC. Club América is the most successful club in Mexico, having won 13 league titles, most recently winning the Apertura 2018.

The tournament will begin on Friday, July 21 with the final taking place on Saturday, August 19 across the U.S. and Canada. Match dates for both group stage contests at Lower.com Field are to be announced.

LEAGUE'S CUP 2023 OVERVIEW: As previously announced, in a monumental new chapter for North American soccer, beginning in 2023, MLS and LIGA MX will pause their respective league seasons each summer and all 47 first division clubs in Canada, Mexico and the United States will compete in the World Cup-style tournament. The annual, month-long competition will crown the winner among MLS and LIGA MX. The champion, as well as the second and third place finishers will qualify for the Concacaf Champions League and an opportunity to earn a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup.

TICKET INFO: The match against Club América will be included as part of current 2023 Crew Season Ticket Memberships and 10-Match Ticket Plans. The match against St. Louis will be included in partial plans and single-match tickets. Season Ticket Members will be auto-enrolled into their season ticket locations for the St. Louis match, but will have the ability to opt-out of tickets prior to the match. More details on the scheduled ticket on-sale will be made available following the release of the Leagues Cup schedule in the coming weeks.

Club América has earned six Copa MX titles, last winning in Clausura 2019 and has won the Campeon de Campeones six times, most recently in 2019.

In the 2021-22 Liga MX season, Club América finished second place in aggregate and appeared in both of the season's Liguilla tournaments in the quarterfinal stage. Club América features multiple Mexican National Team stars, with defender Nestor Araujo and forward Henry Martin representing the Club at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

NEWCOMERS TO MLS: St. Louis enters MLS this season as the 29th team in the league and will compete in the Western Conference. This will be the first and only time the two teams square-off in 2023 as the Crew prepares to face the MLS newcomer in group stage action.
