Columbus Beats Mississippi RiverKings 5-4 after Comeback Scare

Mississippi RiverKings tried to dig itself out of a two-goal hole, but the Columbus Cottonmouths held on for a 5-4 victory.

Columbus made the score 5-3 on a goal by Ben OQuinn at 13:29 in the second period, and Mississippi RiverKings got as close as 5-4 when Reid Campbell scored 6:21 into the third period.

Will Aide had one goal and two assists to lead the Cottonmouths. Aide scored 17:51 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Columbus. Craig Simchuk picked up the assist.

Columbus put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Mississippi RiverKings to score on any of its three power plays. With 37 shots on target during the contest, the Cottonmouths exceeded the 29.7 shots they average per game this year.

Columbus also got points from Simchuk, who also had one goal and one assist. Columbus also had goals scored by Louis Belisle and Shawn Bates, who scored one goal each. In addition, Columbus received assists from Patrick McCadden and Mike Switzer, who contributed one each.

Mississippi RiverKings' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Mississippi RiverKings is averaging 2.5 goals against for the season. The 52 shots that Mississippi RiverKings put on net surpassed Mississippi RiverKings' average of 25.4 shots per game this season.

Mississippi RiverKings was helped by Matt Whitehead, who registered two goals. Whitehead scored the first of his two goals at 13:47 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Columbus. Whitehead's next tally made the score 3-2 Columbus with 16:37 left in the second period. Linden Bahm assisted on the tally. Ryan Marcuz also scored for Mississippi RiverKings. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi RiverKings were Corey Leivermann, who had two and Devin Mantha, Mike Hayward, and Sean Jones, who each chipped in one.

Shannon Szabados made 48 saves for Columbus on 52 shots. The Cottonmouths incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Mississippi RiverKings' Adam Courchaine stopped 32 shots out of the 37 that he faced. Mississippi RiverKings incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
