San Angelo Colts News Release

AMARILLO, Texas - The San Angelo Colts are probably hoping the ULB All-Star Break wasn't for a few more days, as the Colts (33-21) have their first five-game winning streak of the season after beating the Amarillo Dillas 11-4 on Sunday night to sweep the short two-game series.

The Colts took a 1-0 lead just two batters into the game as Bryan Frichter began the game with a triple and scored on a sac fly by John Anderson off Dillas starter Eric Smith (2-2), making his first start of the season after 16 relief appearances.

San Angelo broke the game open with five runs, all of them unearned, in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead. With two out and nobody on base, Craig Richardson reached on an error by the third baseman Andrew Wong, which opened the floodgates. The next two batters reached on infield singles and Richardson scored on a throwing error by the second baseman Josh Ashton on the second of those singles. Jose Torres was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for Andres Rodriguez, who blasted a grand slam to left field, his 11th dinger of the year, making it 6-0.

After the Dillas got an RBI single by Stephen Douglas in the second, the Colts scored three more runs in third to make it 9-1. Richardson scored on a wild pitch in the frame and Bryan Frichter walked with the bases loaded, forcing in a run and chasing Smith from the game. Josh Smith entered the game and allowed an RBI groundout to Anderson, making it 9-1.

All nine runs were charged to Eric Smith, though four were earned, as he allowed six hits with five walks and no strikeouts in just two innings of work. Colts right-hander Billy McKinney (4-2) picked up his second straight win and his first as a starter, going five innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Dillas scored two unearned runs off McKinney in the third to make it 9-3 and A.J. Johnson hit an RBI single in the fifth to make it 9-4, which was the closest the Dillas would get. Josh Smith allowed his only run in six innings of relief in the seventh and the Colts added one more on another Anderson sac fly in the ninth to make it 11-4. After McKinney exited, Brian Henschel, Alex Merricks (two innings), and closer Mitch Lively combined for four hitless and scoreless innings of relief, allowing just three baserunners total.

The All-Star Break begins on Monday, July 14 and the first ever All-Star Game between the United League and Golden League will take place Tuesday night, July 15, at Foster Field in San Angelo, TX. The Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest and the Home Run Derby will precede the game and post-game fireworks, sponsored by Adobe Signs and T-shirts, will follow the historic match-up.
