Laredo Broncos News Release
Edinburg, TX-The Laredo Broncos blew two 2 run leads and lost in 12 innings to the Edinburg Coyotes by the score of 6-5 on Sunday in Edinburg. The Broncos now head into the all star break. They will start a 7 game home stand after the break. For more information you can call (956)-723-BASE (2273).
The Broncos would get on the scoreboard first in the 3rd inning. Anthony Bennett led off the inning with a walk. After an out, Arnoldo Ponce hit an infield single which moved Bennett to 2nd. Luany Sanchez then hit a ground ball to the shortstop Angelo Fermin who bobbled it and then threw high over the 1st baseman's head and out of play. Both Bennett and Ponce would score on the play and Laredo led by a score of 2-0.
The Broncos would tack on another run in the 6th inning. Luany Sanchez led off with a solo home run, his league leading 17th of the season. That made the score 3-0.
That seemed to be plenty of offense for the Broncos starter Sean Donlin as he was shutting down the Coyotes offense. Thru 5 innings, Donlin had allowed only 5 runners to reach base on 2 hits, 2 walks, and an error. But in 3 of those 5 innings, the Coyotes hit into 3 double plays to help out the Broncos.
Donlin ran into some trouble in the 6th inning. With 2 outs he walked Robert Matlock. The next batter Daryl Jones would double to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Donlin would get Argelis Nunez to ground out to Arnoldo Ponce at short, and keep the Broncos 3 run lead.
The Coyotes would get on the scoreboard in the 7th inning. With one out Mayobanex Santana singled. Then Amado German hit a fly ball into right field that Dwayne White dropped. It was ruled a double and put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Alex Entrekin would ground out which scored Santana. Angelo Fermin would then ground out to end the inning. That made the score 3-1.
That would be it for Sean Donlin as he was in line for the win as he went 7 strong innings for the Broncos. He gave up 1 run on 5 hits, he walked 3 batters and struck out 1. Rusty Jones would come into the game in the 8th.
Jones would have trouble in that 8th inning as with one out, Robert Matlock would hit an infield single. Then Daryl Jones hit his 3rd double of the night, which scored Matlock from 1st. A wild pitch would then send Jones to 3rd, and he would score on a single by Argelis Nunez to tie the game. That would be it for Jones as David Wasylak came into the game. Wasylak would get the two men he faced as the game was tied at 3 after 8 innings.
The Broncos offense would bail out Rusty Jones in the top of the 9th inning. With 2 outs Eric Padilla singled. Anthony Bennett then singled with Padilla going to 3rd. On the throw to 3rd Bennett took 2nd on the play. With a 1-2 count, Steven Wright hit a clutch 2 run single scoring both Padilla and Bennett, which gave the Broncos the 5-3 lead.
Wasylak would come out for the 9th as well. He would walk the leadoff man Amado German. German than went to 2nd on a wild pitch, with Alex Entrekin batting. Entrekin was then hit by a pitch which put runners on 1st and 2nd. Angelo Fermin would lay down a sacrifice bunt by Wasylak could not handle it, and the bases were loaded with no one out. Eric Gonzalez then hit a double scoring both German and Entrekin, and advancing Fermin to 3rd. Robert Matlock was then intentionally walked to load the bases and set up a force out at home. Wasylak would be done, and David Watkins came in to try to pitch out of the jam. Watkins would get Daryl Jones to strike out, and then get Argelis Nunez to hit into a 6-4-3 double play which was the 4th double play Edinburg hit into. We went to extra innings with the game tied at 5.
In the 12th inning, Dan Sausville came into the game and walked the first man he faced in Eric Gonzalez. Then Robert Matlock hit a sac bunt to move him to 2nd. Daryl Jones was then intentionally walked to setup a double play situation. But, Sausville walked Argelis Nunez to load the bases. Brandon McConnell would then hit a sacrifice fly with Gonzalez scoring. The Broncos noticed that Nunez never tagged up and threw to 1st to get him out. However, the umpires talked it over and ruled that because the run scored before the double play was completed the run counts, and the Broncos lose 6-5.
The Broncos scored 5 runs on 10 hits and committed 2 errors, while the Coyotes scored 6 runs on 10 hits and committed 1 error.
The Broncos fall to 29-30 on the season. The Broncos will be back in action on Thursday, July 17th when they open a 7 game home stand against the Alexandria Aces at 7:35 at Veterans Field.
