San Angelo Colts News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas - It looked like it could be a long night for Colts starter Frank James. The first two batters of the game reached base, and the Laredo Broncos' leading home run and RBI man, Luany Sanchez, was at the plate. And with Mark Lewis running from second, Sanchez sure hit the ball hard. But James reached out and speared it. He turned and threw to first for the second out, and with Lewis off second, Andres Rodriguez threw to second baseman John Anderson to complete the rare triple play in front of 3,593 stunned fans.

With James out of trouble, the San Angelo offense went to work with five runs in the first, and cruised to a win in the home opener at Foster Field, 11-4 over Laredo. The lefty went five and two-thirds innings for his first win of the season, evening his record at 1-1.

The Colts (4-3) scored those five runs in the first, with a little help from the sun. Tyrone Pendergrass led off with a walk against starter Henry Lozado (0-2). Two more walks, to Bryan Frichter and Jason Crosland, loaded the bases. Benny Craig singled home Pendergrass on a ball that was played hesitantly by Broncos right fielder Jose Salas, who appeared to momentarily lose it in the sun. With two outs, Jose Torres hit a ball to deep right that Salas definitely lost in the sun, as two runs scored on what ended up being a double. Wyn Diggs followed with a two-run single, and the Colts were on their way.

San Angelo tacked on another five-spot in the third. Torres walked with one out, and Diggs doubled him home. Pendergrass singled to advance Diggs to third, and John Anderson singled to left for another run. Then Frichter, who came into the game leading the United League with a .542 average, ripped a three-run homer to left, his second of the season.

That was all for Lozado, and the Laredo bullpen actually did well to stifle the Colts bats. Matt Bauman (3.1 innings, four hits, one run), and Benny Cepeda (2 innings, no hits or runs, four strikeouts) did the job for the Broncos (3-4).

Ryan Mulle relieved James in the sixth with two outs and a man on, and went the final three and a third to pick up his first save of the season.

The Colts continue this six-game homestand with a special morning start time, 10:05 a.m., at Foster Field on Wednesday, May 21, 2008. The Colts battle the Laredo Broncos in game two of this three-game series on Kids' Day, sponsored by the High Sky Children's Ranch.
