San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas - The San Angelo Colts announced Tuesday they have traded shortstop Danny Hernandez to the Southern Illinois Miners of the independent Frontier League in exchange for a player to be named later.
Hernandez, 24, hit .266 with two home runs and 19 RBIs in 48 games for the Colts this season. He spent most of the last three seasons in San Angelo, combining to hit .258 with nine home runs and 59 RBIs in 160 games.
"It is bittersweet leaving San Angelo," Hernandez said. "In my three years, I've met a lot of great people and have made a lot of friends. I am going to miss it, but when an opportunity is knocking on your door you have to answer it."
Hernandez joins the Miners just as they begin a four-game home series against the Evansville Otters at Rent One Park in Marion, Ill. With five weeks remaining in their regular season schedule, the Miners are just four games out of first place in their division and in the hunt for a playoff spot.
Hernandez began his career in the Cincinnati Reds organization in 2009. He spent two years in their organization with three different Rookie Ball affiliates. Now in his fifth professional season, Hernandez goes to Southern Illinois with a .251 career batting average, 13 home runs and 86 RBIs in 215 games.
"Even though I am leaving, I will never forget what San Angelo has given me," Hernandez said. "I want to thank Doc Edwards, Ronnie Gaines, and my host mom Roxie. Ronnie put in a good word with Doc a few years ago, and that gave me the opportunity to play for the Colts. Roxie is a saint for letting me and several other players stay with her over the years. I don't know where I would be now without her."
The Colts begin a 15-game home stand with a doubleheader against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings tonight at 6:05 p.m. Gates open at 5:05 p.m.
