San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas --- For the second time this season, the San Angelo Colts swept the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings in a doubleheader Tuesday night at Foster Field. San Angelo won game one, 7-2, and then took game two, 4-3.
In game one the Colts scored in each of the first two innings to take an early 2-0 lead. San Angelo held a 4-2 lead before scoring three runs in the sixth.
Shortstop Jordan Marks, first baseman Steve Rinaudo, and second baseman Jon Dziomba all scored in the sixth inning. Dziomba hit a two-RBI single that plated Marks and Rinaudo, and then he scored on an RBI double by left fielder Joseph Hicks. The three-run inning knocked WhiteWings' starter Brett Miller out of the game.
Miller (3-5) allowed six runs, five earned, on 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings for the loss. Reliever Kyle Roliard surrendered the Colts' seventh run of the game.
Colts' starter Corey Frerichs (5-6) earned a complete-game win. He gave up two runs on six hits and struck out three batters in seven innings. Frerichs retired the last eight batters he faced, and had three perfect innings.
San Angelo's strong pitching continued in game two. Starter Chandler Barnard (1-0) held the WhiteWings scoreless through his first four innings pitched. He went on to allow three runs on four hits, and strike out a game-high seven batters in six innings for the win.
The Colts got on the board in the third with a solo home run by right fielder Cody Hudson. The homer, which was smashed down the right field line, was the first of Hudson's pro career.
San Angelo then took a commanding 4-0 lead with three more runs in the fourth. Centerfielder Justin Reed had an RBI fielder's choice that scored left fielder Joseph Hicks, and third baseman Ryan Hutson hit a two-run double into left-centerfield that brought home designated hitter Miguel Alfonzo and pinch runner Bubby Williams. Hicks and Alfonzo began the inning with back-to-back singles.
WhiteWings' starter Brett Kennedy (6-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings. In the seventh, Colts' reliever Cephas Howard shut the door on Rio Grande Valley for his fifth save.
The wins improve San Angelo to 30-32, while the losses drop Rio Grande Valley to 32-32. This series continues Wednesday night. It will be a Sure Win Wednesday, sponsored by Sherwin Williams.
