Colts Romp Dogs in Abbreviated Game

Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release

SAN ANGELO, TX - Abilene has lost a lot of close games in 2012, Wednesday night in San Angelo was not one of them. The Colts launched two home runs and exploded for five runs in the sixth on the way to a 10-2 victory in a game limited to 61/2 innings due to lighting at Foster Field.

Billy Petrick started for the Dogs and breezed through the first three innings, allowing only two base runners - Petrick threw a total of 19 pitches to get through the second and third innings.

But the big righty's outing took a turn in the wrong direction in the fourth. After getting Daryl Jones to pop out to second base to begin the frame, Landon Camp singled, and Cory Patton blasted a homer over the center field fence to provide the first two runs of the game. Jason Crosland followed the Patton blast with a double to left-center field, and Ryan Hutson doubled him home to make it 3-0 after four innings.

Over the first two games of the series, Abilene struggled to get runners on base as they totaled just 11 hits. On Wednesday, the Dogs got plenty of men aboard, but only two of them scored. Abilene left at least two runners on base in every inning but the fourth - when they left one - and stranded a total of 13 runners in seven at-bats.

The Dogs' biggest squander came when they left the bases loaded in the top of the fifth. Joe Weik walked to start the inning, and, one out later, Kyle Nichols drove him home with single to center. Geraldo Valentin then walked before Danny Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases with one out. But San Angelo starter Logan Williamson extinguished the threat by getting former teammate Adam De La Garza to fly out to left and Chris Caves to pop out to first.

The Colts created more distance on the scoreboard when Camp fired his ninth homer of the year over the left-center field wall, a two-run blast to give San Angelo a 5-1 lead. But again it was the Dogs who failed to capitalize on a major opportunity in the sixth.

Davis Page singled to start the inning, and Jason Martin followed with a single to right. On the play, Jason Crosland bobbled the ball in right field, allowing Page to reach third and Martin to dive into second. However, the Dogs scored just one run in the inning on a Joe Weik groundout. Wilson Batista lined to left and Nichols struck out, stranding Martin on second.

When Braden Tullis relieved Petrick in the sixth, the right got just one out and allowed five runs on three hits and three walks. Daryl Jones highlighted the inning with a two-run single to center field. By the time Derrick Dingeman relieved Tullis and got the final two outs of the inning, the Colts had scored five runs in the frame to take a 10-2 lead.

The game was called prior to the bottom of the seventh due to lightning.

The Prairie Dogs drop to 22-35 on the season, and they are now six games behind San Angelo (29-30) for the fourth and final playoff spot in the United League standings.

The same squads will tangle on the same field on Thursday night at 7:05. Hear the game on 106.9 KLGD or on the internet at abilenprairiedogs.com beginning with the First Financial Pregame Show at 6:55.
