
Colts nab second straight win in Edinburg

Edinburg, Texas--- The San Angelo Colts (13-6) put runs on the board in the first three innings of the ballgame, then added two more in the ninth, defeating the Edinburg Roadrunners (8-11) for the second night in a row, 8-4.
With Jason Diaz on second base, in the top of the first inning, Ronnie Gaines sent a double to the left center field wall scoring Diaz as the Colts took a 1-0 lead. With Gaines on second, Brian Frichter walked, setting the table for Jason Landreth. San Angelo's designated hitter extended the Colts lead even further as he connected on his third homer of the year, a three run shot giving the Colts a 4-0 lead. They would add single runs in the second and the third inning, as San Angelo led 6-0.
Edinburg would be hitless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Robert Matlock singled. Nick Aranda and Vincent Blue followed with singles. Blue's single scored Matlock and Aranda, Edinburg trailed by four. Still in the fifth, Bryan Smith singled in one more run as the score became 6-3.
Heading into the top of the ninth, the Colts lead had dwindled to just two. Hunter Jobes led off with a single and Butch Ballez followed with a hit by pitch. With runners on first and second, Bradley Goldsmith sacrificed bunted, however the placement of the bunt was so good he did not warrant a throw to first and was rewarded a hit. With the bases full, Jason Diaz singled scoring Jobes and extending the Colts lead to three. Bases remained loaded for Frichter as he grounded to third base. He was retired at first as Butch Ballez came into score, the score was now 8-4. Caleb Rodgers worked the ninth inning, preserving the victory as San Angelo recorded their thirteenth win of the season.
The winning pitcher was Brett Lester (1-1), his first win in his pro career. Lester went four and 1/3 innings, scattering five hits, allowing three earned runs, while striking out four. Matt Duff started the game throwing just one inning of shutout ball. The losing pitcher was Miguel Martinez. The left hander lasted just one and 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs.
Collectively, the Colts managed 13 hits adding eight runs. Bradley Goldsmith led the way with three singles. Jason Diaz was two for five with two singles, two RBI's, and a run scored. Jason Landreth had the only homerun of the contest, a three run shot in the first inning. Bryan Frichter managed two RBI's, including a base hit.
The Colts and Roadrunners will continue their series tomorrow at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Colts lead the series two games to one, as game four's first pitch is set for 7:05.
