San Angelo Colts News Release

San Angelo, Texas - The San Angelo Colts announced Friday they have signed pitcher Derek Vaughn, placed fellow pitcher Jake Negrete on the Inactive List, and released outfielder Dan Evatt.

Vaughn, 23, is a rookie who completed his collegiate career this spring at NAIA Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth. As a senior earlier this year, Vaughn went 6-5 with a 4.73 earned-run average in 16 games and 14 starts.

Vaughn was a First Team All-Conference selection his junior season in 2012. He went 5-0 with a 3.09 earned-run average in 11 games and six starts. In 2011 the Tampa Bay Rays drafted Vaughn, but he opted to remain in school.

The Colts also placed Negrete on the Inactive List after he sustained an elbow injury in his last start on July 4 in Fort Worth. Negrete has already missed one start, and he expected to miss at least one more. The 23-year-old righty is 0-2 with a 6.00 earned-run average in two starts this year.

Evatt leaves San Angelo after batting .205 with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 25 games with the team. The 24-year-old began the season in the independent American Association, and then went to the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings. Evatt was traded from the WhiteWings to the Colts in exchange for future considerations on June 14.

Evatt hit .180 with eight homers and 33 RBIs in 63 games between three different teams this year.

The Colts' series against the Fort Worth Cats concludes tonight. It is Doc Edwards Bobblehead Giveaway Night, sponsored by Suddenlink.

The first 1,000 fans through the front gates will receive a Doc Edwards Bobblehead, courtesy of Suddenlink. Gates open at 6:05 p.m., and first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

The Colts are in the midst of a 12-game home stand. The home stand runs from Tuesday, July 9 through Saturday, July 20, and in that time the Colt face the Fort Worth Cats, Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings, and Edinburg Roadrunners. After this home stand, the Colts begin an eight-game road trip against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings and the Edinburg Roadrunners. The Colts then return home for their last 12-game home stand of the regular season on Tuesday, July 30.
