San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, TX - San Angelo centerfielder Ronnie Gaines hit a grandslam and drove in five runs while first-baseman Josh Collazo went 3-5 with two homers and three RBI to pace the Colts to an easy 13-2 win over the Laredo Broncos on Thursday night at Foster Field. The win pulled the Colts to within 1.5 games of Amarillo for second-place in the ULB standings and homefield advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
The Broncos broke out on top early with two runs in the second on a solo-homerun by catcher Salvador Paniagua (17) and an RBI single by third-baseman Johnatahan Cisneros to take and early 2-0 lead.
But the Colts would score the game's final 13 runs to win going away. They picked up one in the bottom-of-the-second on a RBI single by catcher Trey Carter to make the score 2-1. The Colts would then take the lead with a five-run third thanks to an RBI single Gaines, a two run homer by Josh Collazo (11), a solo-homer by designated hitter Jason Crosland (20), and an RBI single by shortstop Butch Ballez to make it 6-2. Collazo (12) would belt his second homer of the game, a solo shot in the fourth, to extend the San Angelo lead to five.
Things stayed that way until the seventh when the Colts would tack on six more runs off of Laredo reliever Thomas Vasella. Shortstop Butch Ballez singled in a run and second-baseman Mark Ramos drew a bases-loaded walk before Gaines smacked a grandslam homerun (8) to give San Angelo the final tally of 13-2.
From the pitching side it was all starter Logan Williamson (1-1) and the San Angelo bullpen getting the job done as the Colts' lefty went six innings and allowed two earned run on eight hits while striking out five in his first start of the season. Relievers Alex Morales and Brett Bukvitch then combined to go three scoreless innings while allowing one hit and striking out three to end the game. Jeff Jamnik (3-3) took the loss for Laredo after allowing five runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings. For the second consecutive game the Broncos' starter was unable to make it out of the third inning.
The Colts will go for the sweep of Laredo in game four of their series on Friday at 7:05. Brian Henschel (4-6, 5.99 ERA) will pitch for the Colts against Juan Peralta (6-1, 2.93 ERA) for the Broncos. Friday will also be Willie Stargell Bobblehead Night as the first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a Willie Stargell bobblehead doll to honor the Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer who began his professional career in San Angelo in 1959 with the Class D San Angelo Pirates. Stargell holds the distinction of being the only Hall of Famer to have played in San Angelo. The broadcast of the game begins at 6:50 with the Kemps' Pregame Show and can be heard on 1260 KKSA.
