Colts Use the Long Ball to Defeat Broncos

The Broncos (31-37) again were hurt by the long ball, allowing four home runs in game three of the series to the Colts (36-31) and falling 13-2 in San Angelo. Laredo remains just a game back of the White Wings for the final playoff spot in the United League.

The Broncos, attempting to keep their hopes of earning a series split with the Colts sent RHP Jeff Jamnik (3-3) to the plate to face off against LHP Logan Williamson (1-1), making his first start of the season for the Colts.

The Broncos went 1-2-3 in the top of the first against Williamson and Jamnik returned the favor in the bottom of the first retiring the Colts in order.

In the top of the second the Broncos took their first lead of the series. Salvador Paniagua hit his 17th home run of the season, a solo homer that gave the Broncos the 1-0 lead. Nick Mahin then singled followed by a D.J Dixon single and an RBI single by Jonathan Cisneros and the lead was 2-0 Broncos.

San Angelo got on the board in the bottom of the second, Jason Crosland singled with one out. Landon Camp singled and Trey Carter brought home the first run for the Colts with a single to make the score 2-1.

The Broncos, after being retired in order in the top of third, allowed five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jamnik started the inning, allowing a double to Isaac Garcia. After a Mark Ramos ground out, Ronnie Gaines knocked Garcia in with a single to tie the game at 2-2. Josh Collazzo then hit a two run homer, his 11th of the season to give the Colts the 4-2 lead. Jason Crosland then hit home run number 20 on the year, a solo homer giving the Colts the 5-2 lead. Manager Dan Firova went to the bullpen and brought in RHP Maximinio De La Cruz (0-2) into the game. De La Cruz gave a double to Landon Camp, who came home to score on the Butch Ballez RBI single to give the Colts the 6-2 lead.

Josh Collazzo, in the bottom of the fourth hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot that added a run and gave the Colts the 7-2 lead.

The Broncos, with a golden opportunity to plate some runs in the top of the seventh put runners on second and third with no outs thanks to a walk and an error by the second baseman Mark Ramos. San Angelo went to their bullpen, bringing in RHP Alex Morales (0-1) Morales retired the next three batters he faced and the Broncos were unable to score.

In the bottom of the seventh the Colts blew the game wide open. Vessella remained in the game and with one out Landon Camp singled, followed by a walk to Trey Carter. David Cardona then struck out and Butch Ballez knocked home a run with a single to give the Colts the 8-2 lead. Isaac Garcia worked a walk to load the bases and Mark Ramos took an RBI walk too push the lead to 9-2 Colts. The bases remained loaded for Ronnie Gaines, who hit a grand slam, his eighth home run of the season to make the score 13-2 Colts.

The Broncos picked up two base runners in the final two frames and fell to the Colts in game three of the series 13-2.
