San Angelo Colts News Release

San Angelo, TX--For the 2004 edition of the San Angelo Colts, it's been a frustrating season filled with a handful of highs, but many lows. Pensacola added another chapter to the book of disappointment with a come from behind 12-9 victory in 10 innings that sent the Colts to their 5th straight loss overall, and the 9th consecutive time that the Pelicans have defeated San Angelo. Neither starting pitcher would factor into the ballgame as Santos Hernandez for the Pelicans would last just 2/3 of an innings and Mike Henry of the Colts would complete just 4 innings leaving after allowing 6 runs on 7 hits. The Pelicans would grab an early lead on a 1st inning Larry Bethea double to make it 1-0. San Angelo would battle back with 2 in the bottom half to take a lead. Pensacola would then begin their barrage of doubles, scoring a run in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th and 5th innings to establishg a 6-2 advantage. The score would remain 6-2 until the 7th when the Colts would use a 7 run 7th to come storming back to a 9-6 lead. The inning was marked by a Jorge Diaz 2 run single and on the following pitch, Tony James would go deep for a 3-run homer. A crucial error made by the Pelicans in the frame would cause 5 of the 7 runs to be unearned, but the Colts certainly didn't mind as they took a 3 run lead to the 9th. Quentin Jones the Colt's closer came in and would have several chances to finish off the game, 3 times taking the Pelicans down to their final swing, but George Branch doubled off the wall with 2 outs to close the gap to 9-8, and Jose Antonio Salas would single on a 2 strike pitch to knot the game at 9. The Colts would have a chance to win it in the 9th, but a double play ended the threat setting the stage for the Pelican's heroics. A 3-run inning off of Colts relief man Bob Runyon would include a 2-run homer (which would turn out to be the game winner) off the bat of Carlos Mendoza to give the Pelicans their 2nd straight 3 run inning and lead them to a 12-9 improbable win in which they were down to their final swing several times, but fought back to take a hard fought win. Gerardo Casadiego battled back after allowing the Colts the tail end of their 7 run 7th, and pitched the next 3 innings scoreless to get the W. Runyon would be hit with the loss to fall to 0-1. Diaz led the Colts with a 3-4 night, including 3 more stolen bases to give him a total of 46 on the year. Bethea would again haunt San Angelo, this time with a 4-6 performance. The Pelicans also set a new season mark, with 7 doubles in the contest.
