Amarillo Dillas News Release
Amarillo smacked three home runs to build an early lead and staved off a late Fort Worth rally as they edged the Cats 6-5 Wednesday night at LaGrave Field.
The win evens the three-game series at a win apiece as the Cats' second-half record falls to 16-16 and their deficit in the East widened to 6 ½ games behind Pensacola.
The Dillas went up 2-0 in the second inning as second baseman Trent Otis and right fielder Matt Mann each hit solo homers.
Fort Worth narrowed the lead to 2-1 when Carlos Adolfo scored on a Jason Radwan sacrifice fly. But the Dillas quickly responed with a two-run fifth inning that featured run-scoring singles from Dan Meier and Jeremy Todd.
Amarillo appeared to break the game open in the sixth when No. 9 hitter Ben Tinius belted a two-run homer to make it 6-1 Dillas.
But the Cats, who had been limited to just one hit through the first five innings, got a leadoff homer from Tim Hartshorn in the bottom of the sixth. Three of the next four batters came through with hits including a two-run single from Radwan to bring the Cats to within two runs at 6-4.
Fort Worth closed the gap to 6-5 on a Jim Essian RBI groundout, but the Cats never managed to push across the elusive sixth run, as they stranded five runners in the final four innings of the contest.
Amarillo starter John Tevey (4-2) got the win allowing five runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. Former Cat Shawn Morgan worked 2 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball to notch his eighth save of the season.
Fort Worth starter Brandon Wood (8-5) suffered the loss as he permitted three earned runs on five hits in five innings of work. Wood struck out six and walked two.
The Cats and Dillas will wrap up the three-game set on Thursday night at LaGrave Field. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and the Cats will look to veteran Mike Smith (9-6) for another solid outing. He will be opposed by Dillas' left-hander Keith Ferguson (2-3).
