San Angelo, Texas---The San Angelo Colts signed a trio of players Monday with the additions of catcher Travis Calloway, as well as infielders Butch Ballez and Danny Hernandez. Calloway returns to the Colts after a one year hiatus from San Angelo. Ballez, who was a starter at shortstop for the Colts in 2010, had great year offensively and returns to San Angelo for his third straight season. Hernandez comes from affiliated ball after spending time in the Reds organization.
El Paso, Texas native Butch Ballez had a great year in 2011 hitting .324 with seven homeruns and 42 RBI in 77 games for the Colts last season, mostly as a starter at shortstop. Ballez returned last season after he saw time with the Colts in 2009, when he hit .288 with four long balls and 30 RBI. In college at Texas Wesleyan University, he was a two-time selection to the Red River Athletic Conference All-Conference Team.
Danny Hernandez played in the Cincinnati Reds organization each of the last three seasons, climbing to short-season A ball with the Billings Mustangs in the Pioneer League in 2010. The corner infielder from Temple, Texas starred at San Jacinto Junior College, where he led the Gators to the Junior College World Series in 2009, after he hit .355 with 13 homers and 47 runs batted in. Danny helped SJJC to an impressive 24-3 conference record that season.
Travis Calloway will make his return to San Angelo, after he saw time with the Colts in 2009. Travis is now a student assistant coach at Emmanuel College, where he played college ball. Calloway is the second catcher the Colts have signed in the last week.
