February 13, 2007 - United League Baseball (ULB)
San Angelo Colts News Release

The San Angelo Colts, former Houston Astros All-Star J.R. Richard, and the Children's Miracle Network all teamed up Sunday afternoon February 11th to make the 2007 Fanfest in San Angelo a success. With the final numbers now officially in, just over 300 people attended Sunday's event at Buffalo Wild Wings, and helped raise money for a great cause. The event featured some big names and local headliners, making the first of what will be an annual event a smash.

On hand along with J.R. Richard was also former major leaguers Jerry Don Gleaton and Doc Edwards, who led the cast that the Colts featured at the Fanfest. J.R. Richard, a former Astros great, was a 20-Game winner, twice struck out 300 batters in a season, and was a first round pick (2nd overall) of Houston in 1969, spending all 10 years of his career with the Astros. Richard was not the only former first round draft choice by a Texas team present there either. Jerry Don Gleaton, a first round pick (17th overall) of the Texas Rangers out of the University of Texas in 1979, spent 12 years in the big leagues. Doc Edwards, who is currently the manager of the San Angelo Colts, will begin his 50th year in the game when the 2007 season starts. Doc a former player and manager with the Cleveland Indians also played for the Yankees and Phillies. Former Colts players at the Fanfest included Mark Mirizzi and Kevin Brown, who were part of the Colts 2002 championship team. Current Colts outfielders Bryce Morrison, who appears in the TV hit "Friday Night Lights", and one of the Colts newest signings Trey Roberson, were also on hand. Osvaldo "Psycho Monster" Martinez professional boxer and local San Angelo resident rounded out the cast.

Jay Michaels of Foster Communications also spoke at the event about what the Children's Miracle Network does, and why it is such a worthwhile cause. While Mike Wright of SportsManiac Cards & Collectables also held a silent auction, whose proceeds benefited the charity. Rob Haley a lucky fan, was the winner of 1973 Houston Astros Jersey that was worn and personally donated, generously by J.R. Richard himself, also helped raised money with a raffle that went to the afternoon's event. Six-year-old Caulen Zeiters, one of the kids from the Children's Miracle Network who the event was held for, picked the winning ticket.

The San Angelo Colts are part of six-team league that make up United League Baseball. The independent league has teams located in San Angelo, Laredo, Amarillo, Edinburg, and Rio Grand Valley Texas as well as Alexandria Louisiana, and began play in the 2006 season.
