Brownsville stymies Wings again

February 13, 2007 - United League Baseball (ULB) News Release

HARLINGEN, Texas - Buddy Bengal pitched five more strong innings and stymied the Harlingen WhiteWings offense for the third time in eight days Tuesday, leading the Brownsville Toros to a 3-2 victory in the Texas Winter League.

Bengal allowed two runs (one earned) on just one hit in five innings. In the last eight days, he's allowed three runs (two earned) in 15 innings against the Wings. Damon Miller pitched the final two innings to preserve the one-run victory and record his first save.

Since losing the first two head-to-head meetings, Brownsville has defeated Harlingen six straight times by a combined score of 30-6.

Harlingen scored single runs in the first and second innings. Julian Williams singled home Bub Bergstrom in the first inning, and a double steal by Donnie Poles and Kerry Reeves scored an unearned run in the second inning.

Brownsville answered with two runs in the third inning. Brian Spottsville doubled home Ryan Valyan, and Andrew Revall's infield single scored Nick Sanchez. In the fourth, the Toros scored what proved to be the decisive run when normally sure-handed Wings shortstop Aaron Thor booted a grounder that would have been the third out.

The Toros have already clinched first place and a berth in the playoffs. Harlingen's lead over Laredo for second place is now one game with two to play.

Tomorrow's schedule has Brownsville vs. Laredo at 11a.m., and Edinburg vs. Harlingen at 3:30p.m.
