Colorado Eagles News Release
BOISE, ID. - Rookie forward Shawn St-Amant scored midway through the first period to give Colorado an early lead, setting the table for the Eagles 4-2 victory over the Idaho Steelheads on Wednesday. The win now gives Colorado a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. The Eagles finished the night scoring a pair of even-strength goals to go along with a power-play goal and a shorthanded tally.
Colorado would score the game's first goal when St-Amant bashed home a pass from line mate Alex Belzile in the low slot, giving the Eagles a 1-0 edge with 9:05 left in the first period.
Just minutes later, Idaho would draw even on the power play, as forward Jefferson Dahl would blast a shot from the left circle past Eagles goaltender Lukas Hafner to tie the game at 1-1 at the 13:33 mark of the opening frame.
As time wound down in the first period, Colorado would again find itself on the penalty kill, but a shorthanded rush down the ice would lead to forward Ryan Harrison setting up Casey Pierro-Zabotel to tap the puck past Steelheads goalie Landon Bow with on just 41 second remaining in the period. The goal was Pierro-Zabotel's first of the playoffs and gave Colorado the 2-1 advantage.
The Eagles would extend their lead early in the second period when forward Julien Nantel slammed a rebound on top of the crease into the back of the net to give Colorado a 3-1 edge with only 1:55 gone in the period.
Idaho would again find an answer on the power play when forward Kellen Lain snapped a wrister from the right circle to light the lamp and cut the Colorado advantage to 3-2 at the 5:05 mark of the middle frame.
For the second consecutive period, the Eagles would notch a goal late in the period on specialty teams, as Belzile wired a one-timer from the left circle past Bow on the power play with only one second remaining in the period. The goal was Belzile's second tally of the postseason and extended Colorado's lead to 4-2 after 40 minutes of play.
Both teams would generate multiple chances on net in the third period of play, but neither side would find the back of the net, as Colorado held on for the 4-2 victory. Hafner claimed his second straight playoff win, stopping 19 of Idaho's 21 shots on goal. Bow suffered the loss for the Steelheads, surrendering four goals on 40 shots in the contest. Colorado finished the night going 1-for-3 on the power play, while Idaho scored on two of five man-advantage situations.
The Eagles return to action when they face the Idaho Steelheads in Game Four of the ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs on Friday, April 21st at 7:05pm.
