Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

Twelve lucky fans were going to drive home happy regardless of the outcome. The rest of the 6,569 fans at Security Service Field Saturday night needed a Colorado Springs victory to do so.

They can thank the heroics of Doug Bernier, Adam Melhuse and Ian Stewart for sparking a 6-5 comeback victory in ten innings over Fresno.

Ian Stewart led off the tenth inning for the Sky Sox with a single to center field and advanced to second base on Edwin Bellorin's sacrifice bunt. The slugging third baseman then surprised the Fresno defense, stealing third base without drawing a throw.

He would come around to score the winning run when Adam Melhuse's sacrifice fly to left field was just deep enough to allow him time to cross the plate safely.

Geno Espinelli (1-1) took the loss, but Kevin Gryboski's fourth blown save of the season opened the door for the Sky Sox victory.

Entering the game with a two-run ninth inning lead, the relief pitcher retired the first batter quickly before three consecutive Sky Sox hits tied the game at five.

Jon Herrera got the rally started with a single up the middle before Doug Bernier's pinch-hit triple cut the lead in half. Cory Sullivan tied the game moments later with a single to left field.

Steven Register picked up his fifth win of the season against just one loss after tossing an interesting top half of the tenth inning.

With two outs and runners on the corners, Travis Ishikawa hit a hard shot to Melhuse at first base. The natural catcher made a diving stab on the play, and tossed it to Register just in time to set the stage for the walk-off win.

Jason Hirsh started for the Sky Sox, pitching six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits.

Victor Santos tossed seven innings of three-run ball for the Grizzlies.

The Sky Sox and Grizzlies continue their four-game series with a 1:05 MT game Sunday. Sean Smith (3-1, 5.31) will get the call for the Sky Sox opposite Jesse Foppert (2-1, 7.56).
