Colorado Chill Opens Season Saturday

The Colorado Chill kicks off its inaugural season at 7 p.m. MST Saturday against the Houston Stealth in a National Women's Basketball League matchup.

The game is the first NWBL televised game in history. It will be shown throughout Colorado (check the listings below for local coverage) on a live basis, in addition to the first of all 21 Chill games being carried via radio on AM 1570.

The game features the first-year Chill up against the Houston Stealth. Houston is the back-to-back defending champs of the Pro Cup, which is the NWBL's season-ending tournament. Saturday's game opens the season for the NWBL's fourth season.

The game will be the first basketball game to be played in the Budweiser Events Center, the newly opened 6,000-seat facility on Interstate 25 near Windsor. The arena has 24 luxury suites, full concessions and a restaurant and bar. King expects a near sellout for the Chill's season-opening matchup. It will be the first of 12 home games played at the Budweiser Events Center, plus the NWBL All-Star Game on Feb. 16.

The NWBL is a professional women's basketball league that features six teams: the Chill, Houston Stealth, Springfield Spirit, Chicago Blaze, Dallas Fury and Birmingham Power. The season runs Jan. 17 through the end of March, when playoffs begin.

Colorado's roster features Ruth Riley, Becky Hammon, Allison Curtin, Helen Darling and Edna Campbell, all of the WNBA. . A total of eight Chill players played college ball in Colorado.

Houston put together a formidable lineup as well, with Olympic gold medalist Sheryl Swoopes and two of the world's top players in Tina Thompson and Cynthia Cooper.
