Colorado Wins NWBL Title Over Dallas

April 17, 2005 - National Women's Basketball League (NWBL) - Colorado Chill News Release

With all the anticipation leading up to the 2005 NWBL Championship game between the Colorado Chill and the Dallas Fury, no one expected anything but an all-out war between these two teams. With an announced crowd of just under 2200 fans at the Budweiser Event Center Friday night, no one walked away asking for a refund.

Congratulations to the Colorado Chill, the 2005 NWBL Champions by virtue of a 77-70 win over the Dallas Fury.

This game had all the making of a great contest even before the game. Both teams finished the regular season tied with a 16-8 record, having defended their home court with two wins apiece against each other. The Fury boasted Anna DeForge, last season´s MVP and a killer on the Chill´s home court, averaging 34 points a game in 2005. The Chill´s focus was the returning triple threat of Becky Hammon, Ruth Riley and Katie Cronin. As opponents in last season´s Championship game, a game won by the Fury, both teams were fierce rivals on the court the entire season.

There would be two major differences in the Championship game for 2005. First, the Colorado Chill would attempt to dethrone the Fury on their own home court by winning the regular season title on a tiebreaker. Second, the Fury would have to play this fifth season meeting without the services of their 6´4" Center, LaToya Turner, who was injured in the semi-final contest against Lubbock and unable to make the final game. With no excuses offered and a very vocal home crowd, both teams took the court for the opening tip.

From both a statistical and visual standpoint, the first half was an even contest with the lead changing repeatedly and Colorado taking a one point lead into halftime, 29-28. Dallas had out-rebounded a much larger Chill team and Erin Scholz was noticeably absent from the floor the first half. Katie Cronin played the best twenty minutes of her NWBL career, logging 13 points and 4 rebounds while holding Dallas superstar Anna DeForge to only 3 points on 1 of 8 shooting. Personal fouls had no effect on the half, with Dallas converting on 4-5 from the line and Colorado hitting 2-4. The most notable first half number was the bench scoring by the Fury, outpointing the Chill by a margin of 15-0.

The second half opened to a very competitive beginning, with no noticeable surge by either team. Dallas had caused problems for the Chill with the small line-up the first half, but seven minutes into the second half, Colorado abandoned any idea of matching up with a smaller Fury team and inserted Erin Scholz into the mix. She responded with 10 points and 4 rebounds in seven minutes of play, enough to open a comfortable twelve point lead at 62-49. During that same seven minute stretch, Becky Hammon scored 12 of her game-high 31 points and Ruth Riley contributed a handful of her 10 rebounds for the game. One minute later, Hammon had scored 6 more points, creating an insurmountable 19 point lead with 4:42 left in the game. The Fury, who finished with four players in double figures, were unable to overcome a 32-15 run over eight minutes in the second half by Colorado. Most notable play from Dallas came by way of Joanne Aluka, whose 13 points and 8 rebounds gave the Fury their only post presence for the night.

Choosing an MVP for this game was a tough decision. Scholz, whose seven minute performance rocketed her team into the lead, was certainly a candidate. Katie Cronin had a stellar night, with 19 points and 6 rebounds. Who could forget her defense, which held Anna DeForge to 9 points on 3 of 15 shooting for the important first 36 minutes of the game. But tonight, the MVP award would go to Becky Hammon, the feisty guard who led her team with 31 points on 10 of 19 shooting with 6 assists and 3 steals.

Colorado had become the 2005 NWBL Champions and the Chill fans would celebrate with their team, a team that went undefeated for two consecutive years at the Budweiser Events Center.
