Colonials Still Alive For Berth In Championship Game

November 6, 2010 - United Football League (UFL 1)
Hartford Colonials News Release

The Hartford Colonials are still in a position to play for the United Football League Championship.

Hartford's hopes of hoisting the William Hambrecht Trophy, awarded to the UFL champion, were kept alive Friday night when the Florida Tuskers defeated the Omaha Nighthawks, 31-14. The Colonials (2-4) and Tuskers (3-3) play Thursday, Nov. 11, at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. The kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm.

"We're happy to still be in the hunt for the final playoff spot," Colonials Head Coach and General Manager Chris Palmer said. "Now we have to take care of business. We're playing a red-hot Florida team Thursday night."

The UFL regular season ends Nov. 20 with the Colonials playing the Las Vegas Locomotives at Rentschler Field at 3:30 pm. The top two teams in the standings will play for the UFL Championship on Nov. 27 at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, NE.

Las Vegas (5-1), the defending champion, has already clinched a berth in the title game. To have any chance at playing in it, the Colonials must win their final two games and hope Omaha (3-3) loses its final two.

The Colonials would clinch a spot in the championship game if they finish the regular season tied for second place with Florida and Sacramento. Under that scenario, in which all three teams were 4-4, the tiebreaker would favor the Colonials.

The UFL tiebreaker procedure states: "In the event of a three-way tie, a head-to-head tiebreaker will first be used to eliminate a team. For example, if three teams finish tied with a 4-4 record, they will be measured head to head within that group of three teams."

The Colonials would have a 3-1 combined record, which would include 2-0 against Sacramento and 1-1 against Florida. Meanwhile, Sacramento would be 2-2 and Florida 1-3.

It's also conceivable the Colonials could advance to the UFL Championship if they finish tied for second with Florida at 4-4. The following tiebreakers would then be used to determine which team plays Las Vegas:

* Head to head among tied teams: Hartford and Florida would have split the season series, thus the next tiebreaker would apply.

* Strength of victory over all opponents at the conclusion of the season: This takes into account combined winning percentage of the opponents a team has beaten. The team whose opponents have the higher winning percentage wins the tiebreaker.

* Most points scored: It will include all games during the regular season.

* Points differential: It will take into account points for and against from all games during the regular season.

* Fewest points conceded. It will include points allowed in head-to-head games.

* Best record on the road in all games.

Tickets can be purchased for the Colonials final home game Nov. 20 against Las Vegas at 3:30 pm by call 860-913-2300 or go to www.hartfordcolonials.com.
