Quad City Steamwheelers News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa – Arena Football may be a professional game, but the Quad City Steamwheelers will infuse a healthy dose of collegiate football spirit into their semi final playoff game against the Arkansas Twisters Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in The MARK when the University of Iowa Hawkeye Cheerleaders and mascot Herky the Hawk charge onto a football field one quarter the size of the gridiron they are so familiar with in the friendly confines of Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City 60 miles to the west.

The black and gold garbed squad will be the featured entertainment at half time as they make their first appearance at an Arena Football game (which was invented by an Iowa Alumni). With seven former Hawkeye players on the Wheelers roster this year and five slated to play Saturday night, the Hawk cheer squad should feel a little more at home in The MARK as they perform.

The Hawkeye football team, which starts pre-season drills this week, opens the 2003 season and defense of their 2002 Big 10 Title Saturday, August 30 against Miami of Ohio in Iowa City Head Coach Kirk Ferentz and family enjoyed the Wheelers win over the San Diego Riptide July 12 as special guests of the Steamwheelers.
