Carolina Cobras News Release

CHARLOTTE The Carolina Cobras announced today that they have signed OL/DL Jerness Gethers and DS Adrian Jones. The team also placed OL/DL Decorye Hampton and WR/LB Van Johnson on injured reserve.

Gethers, a former University of North Carolina lineman, is a two-year AFL veteran. He spent the 2000 season with the New England Sea Wolves and played for the Toronto Phantoms in 2001. Prior to entering the AFL, Gethers played in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders in 1998 and 1999. He started 27 games at UNC, including the 1994 Sun Bowl and 1996 Gator Bowl. He began his college career as a walk-on, but earned a scholarship as a freshman. He was co-recipient of the team¹s Most Improved Player award as a senior in 1996.

Jones is a former North Carolina Central defensive back who spent last season playing in af2, the AFL's developmental league. He played two games with the Cape Fear Wildcats and eight games for Cobras head coach Mike Hold with the Augusta Stallions. He spent the 2001 season on the Cobras practice squad after playing for the af2 Greensboro Prowlers in 2000. At N.C. Central, Jones was a three-year starter at defensive back and was a teammate of Cobras defensive backs coach Maurice Blanding and Cobras DS Buddy Crutchfield. He was First Team All-CIAA as a punt returner in 1997 and as a defensive back in 1996, when he led the conference with eight interceptions..

Hampton suffered a severe sprain in his right foot in the Cobras loss to Dallas on March 21 and did not play last Friday. Johnson has a metacarpal fracture in his left wrist, which kept him out of action last week.

The Cobras visit the Los Angeles Avengers this Friday at 10:30 p.m. They return home for back-to-back games against the Tampa Bay Storm on Friday, April 11 and Georgia Force on Friday, April 18.

Tickets for all home games can be purchased at the Charlotte Coliseum box office, at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at 704-522-6500. Single-game tickets for all 2003 home games are available in the following prices: $8 (lower level end zones), $15 (lower level corners), $25 (lower level sideline) and $50 (lower level sideline).
