Carolina Cobras News Release
CHARLOTTE - The Carolina Cobras of the Arena Football League announced the release of six players as the team works to pare down their active roster to the league limit of 24 players by Monday, February 2. The team also announced that first-year wide receiver/defensive back Lenzie Jackson has been placed on the injured reserve list.
"This is always the toughest part of the year for everybody involved," said Cobras Head Coach and Director of Football Operations Eddie Khayat. "We had to cut some very good players that have done their very best. Every team must play by the same rules, and with the 24-man roster limit, we had some outstanding players that we just weren't able to keep."
Among those released was wide receiver/defensive back Aundrae Harris, who spent four games with the Cobras during the 2003 season. In 14 career contests, he has tallied 29.5 tackles and three interceptions on defense and five receptions for 44 yards on offense.
The five additional players waived were all first-year AFL players. Those released include offensive and defensive linemen Jason Geter, Chris Royle and Greg Walls, as well as offensive specialist Ernest Simms and quarterback Caleb Slover.
Jackson will miss at least two weeks of action after being placed on injured reserve with bursitis in his left knee. He enters his first season in the AFL after spending three seasons with the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers. Used primarily on special teams, Jackson returned 18 kickoffs for 351 yards (19.5 yards per return) in 21 career NFL contests.
The Cobras kick off the 2004 season on Sunday, February 8 on the road against the Dallas Desperados. Carolina will open its home schedule on Saturday, February 21 versus the Arizona Rattlers. Season tickets are on sale now and start as low as $64 per seat. For more information, call 877-4-COBRAS or visit www.cobrasfootball.com.
