Carolina Cobras News Release

CHARLOTTE The Carolina Cobras of the Arena Football League today announced the recipients of their fourth annual team awards. Offensive specialist Bernard Holmes was selected as the team's Most Valuable Player, wide receiver/defensive back Nick Ward received the Ironman Award, fullback/linebacker Tim McGill was selected as the Most Improved Player and defensive specialist Derek Stingley was chosen as the Cobras Award winner for community service and leadership.

Holmes was selected as team MVP by his teammates after recording 200 or more all-purpose yards in 10 consecutive games played before suffering a season-ending knee injury in Week 13. He put together six of the top eight all-purpose yard games in franchise history this season, including the third-best overall performance in AFL history with 413 all-purpose yards against Georgia on April 18. Despite appearing in just 11 games, Holmes finished the year as one of only three players in AFL history to have 10 or more games of 200 or more all-purpose yards in a season. He set new franchise season records for touchdowns (20), 100-yard receiving games (6), kickoff returns (74), kickoff return yards (1,546), combined return yards (1,644) and all-purpose yards (2,641).

As the team's Ironman Award winner, Ward was one of only two Cobras to appear in all 16 games this season. The three-year AFL veteran finished third on the club with career highs of 38.0 tackles, six pass breakups and two interceptions. Offensively, he had 25 receptions for 268 yards and seven touchdowns.

McGill appeared as a lineman in 10 of Carolina's first 12 games before shifting to fullback/linebacker for the team¹s final four outings. He recorded 13.5 tackles, five quarterback hurries and two sacks in his rookie campaign.

Stingley led the team with 14 pass breakups and ranked second with 52.5 tackles. The seven-year AFL veteran made his presence felt both on and off the field this season. He played a large role in the Cobras community relation efforts, spending countless hours volunteering his time around the Charlotte area.
