Grand Rapids Rampage News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Arena Football League announced today that Grand Rapids Rampage fullback/linebacker Chris Avery has been selected to the All-Ironman team.
Avery (6-0, 238, Kentucky State) set the Rampage single-season record with 166 yards rushing this season, a total that ranked fifth in the AFL. The powerful runner compiled his record-breaking numbers on just 35 carries, resulting in a team-record 4.74 yard rushing average. Avery's finest performance came against the Dallas Desperados (3/16) when he posted 71 yards rushing, including a record 40-yard scoring run.
The third-year player also was a defensive force from his linebacker position, recording 26.5 tackles, ten quarterback hurries, three tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.
Earlier this week, Avery received the Rampage's Coach's Award for his consistent efforts on and off the field throughout the 2003 campaign.
The All-Ironman team, which was established prior to the 1999 season, honors players who excel on both sides of the football. Grand Rapids' Michael Baker (1999) and Chris Ryan (2002) have previously garnered recognition for their Ironman efforts.
Avery will take to the turf this Sunday, May 25 as Grand Rapids takes on the Detroit Fury in the Wild Card Round of the AFL playoffs. Coverage of the intrastate showdown can be seen on NBC Sports (WOOD-TV) and heard locally at WBBL 1340 AM. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. (ET).
Tickets are still available for Sunday's game and can be purchased by contacting the Rampage office at (616) 559-1871 or Tickets PLUS at (616) 222-4000 or (800) 585-3737. Tickets are also available at The Zone, located on the west side of Van Andel Arena, all West Michigan Meijer locations, and on-line at www.ticketsplus.net and the Rampage Web site.
