Coastal Bend Thunder News Release
The name and logo of the newest member of the United League Baseball was unveiled at a press conference at Fairgrounds Field near Robstown, Texas Tuesday.
The team - the Coastal Bend Thunder - will be among the six ULB clubs who open their 2009 season on June 11.
ULB President Byron Pierce said a number of names were considered, but the name of the Thunder seemed to be the favorite.
"We have chosen the Thunder nickname and logo to represent the coastal Bend area baseball club due to the aggressive attitude of the people here, who stand firm in the face of the tremendous storms that threaten them each year," Pierce said.
"It is a tribute to their strength and character."
About 70 Nueces County and area communities' elected officials, dignitaries and members of the media from Robstown, Corpus Christi, Kingsville and Alice attended the event.
Also on hand at the event was "Dirty" Al Gallagher, former major league player and the field manager of the Coastal Bend club.
The Thunder opens its season with four games at Harlingen, then opens its home season on June 15 with Edinburg.
The late start is due to a federal bankruptcy by its former owners. As a result of that, the original co-founders, Pierce and former U.S. Rep. John Bryant, were able to re-purchase the league.
The six clubs are Coastal Bend, Harlingen, Edinburg, Laredo, Amarillo and San Angelo.
