Columbus Fury News Release
COLUMBUS - The Columbus Fury of Pro Volleyball Federation has added former Puerto Rican National Team coach, Carlos Cardona as an assistant coach. A native of Argentina, Cardona will bring support and leadership, as well as 43 years of volleyball coaching experience, to the team as he assists Head Coach Ángel Pérez in the coaching duties for the Fury.
"Carlos brings over 30 years of experience at the highest level of professional volleyball," explained head coach Ángel Pérez. "His resume speaks for itself. He has coached in multiple leagues around the world and has been successful in each of his roles. He is a brilliant mind of the sport, very analytical, and we are lucky to have him as part of the Fury staff."
Coach Cardona brings a wealth of experience coaching at the professional level, including in the Italian league, which is widely recognized as the best women's professional volleyball league in the world. He led the Puerto Rican National Team to its one of their highest international rankings on both the men's and women's sides. Cardona also led the Puerto Rican men to four first place finishes in tournaments in 2009 (Men's Central American Games) and 2010 (Men's Central American Games, Men's FIVB first and second World Qualifiers). His knowledge and experience at the highest levels of professional volleyball will be instrumental for the Fury in year one.
"I am honored to join the Columbus Fury volleyball family," stated Cardona. "I have coached in the best volleyball leagues around the world but have never coach in the United States, I am looking forward to this new experience. I come from a volleyball family, both my parents used to play, and my father was not only a great player but a great coach as well. I have had the honor to coach many amazing players in my career, including coach Ángel Pérez and Raymariely Santos during their early years with the Puerto Rican National Teams. I cannot wait to be in Columbus to use my experience, alongside Ángel's intelligence and tenacity, to coach this great team full of young talents that will unleash their fury in Pro Volleyball Federation."
Cardona's hire completes the Fury coaching and support staff that now includes four people with ties to Puerto Rico. During his stint with the Puerto Rican Men's National Team, Cardona coached Pérez from 2006-10. The full staff includes Technical Director, Jose Figueroa, and Athletic Trainer, Felix Gordillo, who both worked with Pérez during his time in the Puerto Rican League.
