Club Record Five Home Runs Not Enough on Sunday

Mississippi Braves News Release

BILOXI, MS - The Mississippi Braves matched a club record with five home runs on Sunday, but it wasn't enough in a 14-10 loss at Biloxi. The loss handed Biloxi a 4-2 series win and dropped the M-Braves to 4-8 on the young season.

The 3 hour, 44-minute contest saw 24 runs scored, 20 hits, 19 walks, 29 strikeouts, and 12 total pitchers used.

Biloxi (5-7) sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning and pushed M-Braves starter, Mitch Stallings (L, 0-2), from the game after just 1/3 of an inning pitched. Stallings gave up six runs on four hits with two walks after retiring the first batter he faced. Ryan Aguilar greeted new pitcher Will Latchum with a two-run single with the bases loaded to stretch the lead to 6-0, and eventually 7-0.

Trailing 8-0, the M-Braves finally got to Biloxi starter Luis Contreras in the top of the third. Justin Dean used the strong wind blowing towards right field to hit a two-run home run to put the M-Braves on the scoreboard. His second homer of the season made it 8-2, also increasing his on-base streak to a team-best 11 games. Three batters later, CJ Alexander smashed a two-run home run to right and cut the lead in half, at 8-4.

The Shuckers increased their lead back to seven runs in the fourth inning by scoring three runs and taking advantage of an errant Matt Hartman throw to the plate in the fourth inning.

Mississippi hit their third home run in the sixth inning on a three-run shot by Drew Lugbauer, his first at the Double-A level. The homer off of Milwaukee rehabbing right-hander Bobby Wahl was launched over the scoreboard at MGM Park and cut the lead to 11-7.

Again the Shuckers answered by pushing across three runs in the seventh inning against Kurt Hoekstra, with Alexander Palma capping the frame with a two-run double.

In the ninth, Alexander destroyed a pitch from Biloxi reliever Peter Strzelecki to right field for his second homer of the game to make it 14-9. Alexander joined Shea Langeliers as the only M-Braves player with multiple home runs on the season. They are tied for the team lead with three on the season.

Two batters later, Jacob Pearson smashed Mississippi's fifth home run to right field, making it 14-10.

The five home runs matched a club record, set by the M-Braves on July 3, 2019, in Pensacola. Mississippi is second in the Double-A South with 17 on the season and 31 of the 41 runs scored this season have come via the long ball. Trey Harris was on base three times, finishing 1-for-3 with a run scored. Lugbauer was 2-for-5.

The M-Braves will enjoy Monday off, then begin a 12-game homestand on Tuesday at Trustmark Park. Game one of a six-game series with the Chattanooga Lookouts is on Tuesday night at 6:35 pm.
